Senior Health & Benefits Consulting Attorney role at Mercer. This hybrid role requires working at least three days a week in the office and is based in any Mercer Central zone office.
The Senior Health & Benefits Consulting Attorney will join a highly-skilled, cohesive team of lawyers and technical experts who analyze health and welfare benefit plan legislation, regulations, subregulatory guidance, and judicial decisions and provide guidance and practical next steps for compliance or mitigation to our clients.
Responsibilities
- Develop market-differentiating advice, insights, and solutions related to health and welfare plan compliance.
- Analyze key policy, legislative and legal developments and issues, and share advice, insights and solutions with internal and external clients.
- Draft legal documents including plan documents, summary plan descriptions, and compliance notices and disclosures for plan participants and beneficiaries.
- Act as legal / technical expert providing compliance consulting, insights and solutions to clients and consultants on unique legal / technical and compliance issues affecting the design, administration, and operations of health and welfare plans, programs, and practices.
- Consult with clients on health and welfare plan design and cafeteria plan qualifications under the Internal Revenue Code and ERISA.
- Present compliance consulting capabilities in business development settings to clients and prospective clients along with sales consultants, account managers, and business consultants.
- Deliver presentations on a variety of health and welfare plan law topics to clients, prospects and HR / benefits professionals in various settings, including meetings and conferences.
- Collaborate with consulting attorney colleagues and other experts to develop market-differentiating analyses and practical implications relating to health and welfare plan regulatory developments.
- Work with Subject Matter Experts to identify and address complex legal and compliance issues, especially where clear answers do not exist.
- Proactively stay current on key federal and state health and welfare plan legislative and regulatory developments.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor degree with at least ten (10) years of experience in a Legal, Compliance, Legal Consultant, or related position.Ten (10) years of legal experience with : employee benefits or tax; ACA requirements; HIPAA privacy and security consulting for group health plans; COBRA continuation coverage; Mental Health Parity; state insurance laws and regulations; HR practice, laws, plans, and operations; advising on employee benefit topics with a service provider firm, consulting firm, law firm, or government agency.Current license or certificate to practice law from at least one state bar association.Excellent verbal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate technically complex developments in easy-to-understand and actionable ways.What makes you stand out

The applicable base salary range for this role is $176,400 to $352,800. The base pay offered is determined by factors including experience, skills, location, and applicable minimum wage requirements, with performance-based incentives possible.
