We are currently seeking Director of Library Services in our Detroit, MI office. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the library, including budgeting, staff, collections, services, and space. Working closely with Practice and Industry Group Leaders, the Marketing Team, and firm leadership this position supports the firm’s strategic business objectives. In coordination with these objectives, the director must be a skilled researcher and leader with broad experience in library information systems and a focus on legal information access.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Strategizing and implementing best practices, processes, policies, priorities, and goals for the library, including an effective competitive intelligence program.
• Ensuring that knowledge and research services adhere to firm quality standards and market best practices.
• Selecting, supervising, evaluating, and training team members. Supporting and advocating for the team, including soliciting feedback, developing skills, and directing performance improvements.
• Performing budgeting and expense management for the department. Collaborating with vendors to ensure advantageous pricing and licensing arrangements.
• Leading daily technical operations for the firm’s information resources.
• Designing and delivering research and resources orientation and training sessions for legal professionals. Leveraging people, vendors, processes, and technology to deliver knowledge and research services and training in an efficient and scalable manner.
• Promoting resources by overseeing and maintaining intranet pages and other tools to facilitate research, retrieval, and current awareness.
• Evaluating, selecting, and implementing information resources and technologies for the library. Working with practice and industry leaders to identify information and service needs and assess existing holdings.
• Conducting periodic reviews and comparisons of new and existing electronic resources with an eye toward improved service and research efficiencies.
• Gathering internal metrics to guide initiatives and ensure adoption of tools and resources.
• Supervising and conducting in-depth research in a wide range of areas including practice-specific areas of law, business intelligence, public records, legislative history, and media. Analyzing and synthesizing information to deliver quality results and solve problems under tight deadlines and fluctuating workloads.
• Maintaining expert working knowledge of the library collections, online database resources and licensing restrictions.
• Processing invoices, recording data in acquisitions databases, and allocating client-matter charges.
• Educating the firm about copyright compliance.
