We are seeking a skilled Data Center Technician to join our RunOps team as a 1099 independent contractor.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in Fiber optic cabling, termination, testing, and troubleshooting, as well as hands-on experience with racking, stacking, and physical data center operations. This role requires precision, technical ability, and commitment to maintaining uptime and performance across mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
Cabling & Termination
- Mount and install racks, patch panels, Fiber optic hardware, and grounding for racks / equipment.
- Terminate LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO / MTP connectors for both multimode and single-mode Fiber.
- Terminate simplex & duplex jumper cords, breakout outside plant Fiber, and indoor tight-buffered multimode / single-mode Fiber.
- Install fan-out kits, buffer tubes, and other structured cabling components.
- Perform continuity testing, volt-ohmmeter use, troubleshooting opens / crosses / shorts, and tone set usage.
- Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA / EIA standards.
Testing & Troubleshooting
Conduct Fiber testing using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.Troubleshoot and correct problems end-to-end and across the network using OTDR.Splicing
Perform mechanical and fusion splicing on all types of Fiber cable.Execute building entrance splices, maintenance space splices, and direct buried splices.Operational & Administrative
Accurately complete all documentation including timesheets, work orders, material / tool transfers, and change orders.Provide onsite support after business hours as part of on-call schedule.Travel to various sites as required to support deployments and maintenance.Complete additional tasks and duties as assigned.Physical & Mental Requirements
Self-motivated, positive, professional, and proactive in identifying process improvements.Strong communication and interpersonal skills to act as liaison with customers, vendors, and business partners.Proven problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to give clear oral and written presentations.Ability to work at heights, from ladders, and in confined spaces.Ability to lift to 50 lbs and move up to 75 lbs.Must be able to distinguish Fiber color codes, read small print, and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.Qualifications & Skills
Minimum of 18 months hands-on experience with Fiber cabling, termination, and splicing (fusion & mechanical).Familiarity with TIA / EIA Fiber standards and structured cabling best practices.Proficiency with OTDR, Fluke testers, and related Fiber testing tools.Strong understanding of data center operations and Layer 1 infrastructure.
