What You Will Do As a Data Scientist, you’ll leverage your programming expertise along with data science and insurance industry knowledge to deliver high-quality analytical and modeling solutions for client engagements. You’ll process, visualize, and analyze diverse data sets, from telematics and insurance claims data to catastrophe models and climate variables, using Python, R, and / or SAS. While a majority of your work will focus on traditional property and casualty insurance analytics, you’ll also participate in projects exploring the impacts of climate change and natural catastrophes on other industries and broader economic trends.

  • Manipulate, summarize, and validate large datasets for accuracy and consistency using statistical programming languages
  • Build risk scores using geospatial, climate, and other contextual data
  • Develop predictive models using linear and non-linear methods
  • Contribute to ETL processes in support of client engagements, product development, and internal research
  • Participate in checking and peer review of the work product of other data scientists and analysts
  • Assist peers and project managers in scoping out new projects or opportunities
  • Draft clear, professional reports and exhibits for internal and external audiences

Professional Qualifications

What We Are Looking For

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree or higher, including quantitative coursework in data science, data engineering, mathematics, statistics, computer science, etc.
  • At least one year of relevant professional experience with demonstrable quantitative and data-driven work, such as property and casualty insurance, natural catastrophe modeling, climate risk, or related fields
  • Advanced programming experience in SAS, R, or Python for data manipulation, analytics, and modeling
  • Substantial expertise with MS Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, and Word
  • Understanding of relational database concepts
  • Able and willing to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government-issued Public Trust security clearance
  • Individual(s) must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for immigration support or sponsorship from Milliman, now or in the future.

  • Three or more years of relevant professional experience
  • Strong understanding of climate data sets, geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, regression models, and insurance analytics
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as PowerBI, Tableau
  • Location

    This is a remote position, based in the United States. Candidates hired into this role may work onsite in select Milliman office locations, if they prefer (though no relocation assistance will be available). Occasional work-related travel may be required for practice meetings, company events, industry conferences, etc.

    Compensation

    The overall salary range for this role is $65,200 - $151,440. A combination of factors will be considered, including, but not limited to, education, relevant work experience, qualifications, skills, certifications, etc.

    Alaska, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, or the District of Columbia :

  • $71,720 - $114,620 if overall experience is less than 5 years; and
  • $86,680 - $138,820 for experience greater than 5 years
  • New York City, Newark, San Jose, or San Francisco :

  • $78,240 - $125,040 if overall experience is less than 5 years; and
  • $94,560 - $151,440 for experience greater than 5 years
  • All other states :

  • $65,200 - $104,200 if overall experience is less than 5 years; and
  • $78,800 - $126,200 for experience greater than 5 years
