Overview
Supervisory Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist (BESS) within a Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) department at a VA facility. Works in support of the medical equipment management program. This position is equivalent to a Biomedical Equipment Technician Supervisor (BMET Supervisor) and utilizes supervisory and personnel management authorities and responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Oversees, directs, and manages the lifecycle management of the facility's medical equipment and clinical systems.
- Collaborates with other departments and service lines, clinical and administrative staff, and executive leadership at the medical center, VISN, and national levels, as needed.
- Directs work on all aspects of medical equipment and clinical systems support including technology assessments, acquisition and implementation; planned and corrective maintenance; upgrades and modifications; and end-of-life tasks such as decommissioning, data sanitization, and technical evaluation for condition prior to disposal.
- Establishes workload distribution and revisions to meet workload priorities, challenges, and issues.
- Establishes and maintains the medical equipment management program and completes annual evaluations of its effectiveness.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures to ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
- Establishes and monitors metrics, and initiates performance improvement activities.
- Defines, evaluates, and enhances subordinate staff competencies; develops training plans to address gaps in staff and departmental competencies.
- Develops, delivers, and evaluates performance plans for subordinate staff; recognizes exceptional performance.
- Manages recruitment, screening, interviewing, and selection of qualified candidates; employs resources to retain talent; develops succession plans.
- Forecasts and develops departmental budgets; manages fund control points; ensures purchases and expenditures comply with federal law; serves as a Government Purchase Card (GPC) holder or approving official.
- Acts as Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) and / or oversees contractor performance and vendor services.
- Solicits and reviews customer feedback to monitor quality of the program and address issues promptly.
- Manages hazard alerts, recall notifications, and incidents concerning medical equipment and clinical systems; documents actions in the appropriate system.
- Plans, leads, and / or manages projects for medical equipment and clinical systems; oversees the facility's medical device protection program and cybersecurity of networked equipment.
- Provides subject matter expertise on assigned committees, projects, and workgroups; troubleshoots issues and performs corrective actions; conducts inspections and planned maintenance; documents work in the CMMS; uses appropriate test equipment; provides customer support and staff education on safe operation and maintenance.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements; provides guidance and mentorship to expand professional knowledge and technical skillsets.
- Maintains and enhances knowledge in technological advancements through professional development and training; performs other duties as assigned.

GS-12 Supervisor Biomedical Equipment Support Specialist with one year of creditable experience at the GS-11 level; responsibilities include managing multiple assignments, overseeing maintenance and safety of medical equipment, overseeing contracts, coordinating training, and providing technical and program oversight.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) include leadership, policy development, interpersonal skills, data analysis, supervision, and guidance on medical equipment and clinical systems.
Assignments emphasize administrative and technical supervision, development of competency, training, budget and resource management, and cross-functional project leadership.
