Pay : $112k - $128k Annually, based on experience

Schedules : Monday - Friday, occasional weekends

  • The Director of Nursing is responsible for the planning, budgeting, organizing, developing and directing the overall operation of the Nursing Service Department in accordance with current Federal, State and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern the facility to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times in accordance with the Budget and Operation Plans of the organization. Responsible for ensuring that an adequate level of services is provided to each resident, documented appropriately and regularly evaluated. Responsible to ensure the utilization of Volunteers of America National Services core clinical systems.

    QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently registered with the State Board of Examiners for Registered Nurses in the state where the facility is located.
  • Minimum of three (3) years administrative and supervisory experience in a long term health care setting. Has knowledge of Transitional care including skilled and unskilled rehabilitation nursing or related experience.
  • Verbal and written abilities necessary to communicate and work effectively with various levels of staff, residents, family members and the public, and representatives of the various regulatory agencies, and for required written documentation or reports.
  • Numerical ability necessary to make various computations in planning departmental objectives, keeping work records and schedules, preparing budgets, requisitioning supplies, and monitoring inventory control.
  • Ability to apply principles of personnel administration to interviewing, selection and supervision of employees, and in monitoring department activities.
  • Able to evaluate reports, programs, systems, and other data against both judgmental and verifiable criteria.
  • Able and willing to work flexible hours, such as during a staff shortage or emergency situation.
  • Ability to utilize computers and other electronic devices for tasks such as timekeeping, in-servicing and documentation.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Administer Personnel Functions
  • Directs and delegates the management functions of licensed and ancillary personnel.

  • Coordinates activities of various nursing units, promotes and maintains harmonious relationships among nursing personnel, and with medical staff, residents and the public.
  • Interviews and hires department personnel or monitors and evaluates the process if delegated to another person. Counsels and / or disciplines employees on infractions of established rules; terminates employees when needed.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and approves established wage changes.
  • Determines the number of professional and non-professional staff necessary to meet the nursing care needs of the residents.
  • Develops, implements and maintains work routines and special staffing schedules. Maintains an established staffing schedule, not exceeding budgeted hours per pay period for the department.
  • Plans, directs and evaluates orientation and in-service training programs for the professional and non-professional staff.
  • Schedules, gives direction on agenda and records regular department meetings.
  • Reviews API verifying hours worked and approves overtime.
  • Reviews and revises department job descriptions and work routines for all department positions on at least an annual basis; submits to Executive Director for approval.
  • Attends Department Head meetings and all-staff meetings and in-service programs as scheduled. Represents the department on various committees as requested by the Executive Director.
  • Instructs staff on various federal, state and facility’s regulations, policies and procedures, monitors compliance.
  • Develops, implements and monitors a plan addressing staff training in reimbursement documentation requirements.
  • Participates in Executive Director-approved ongoing educational programs.
  • Assists with the establishment, implementation and administration of facility Personnel Administration System.
  • Accepts responsibility for the facility in the absence of the Executive Director.
  • Department Budgeting and Planning Processes
  • Participates in the preparation of the operating and capital budget for the Nursing Department.

  • Confers with the Executive Director, on an annual basis, in the development and implementation of department objectives with respect to overall facility and organizational goals; reviews quarterly.
  • Plans and conducts discussions with the supervisory and professional nursing staff to encourage participation in formulating Nursing Department goals and objectives.
  • Reviews department goals on a quarterly basis.
  • Supports and implements administrative policies established by the governing authority and / or by the Executive Director.
  • Submits a brief written report monthly to the Executive Director concerning department functions and expenditures.
  • Recommends to the Executive Director purchases or repairs of department equipment; initiates Executive Director-approved equipment repairs.
  • Monitors monthly department expenditures to budget.
  • Maintains current written records of department expenditures and assures that adequate reports / records are maintained to adequately reflect facility operational costs.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director in reviewing department policies and procedures at least annually; makes written recommendations.
  • Ensures ordering of supplies and equipment is done from the Volunteers of America approved vendors.
  • Policy Functions
  • Responsible for understanding and complying with all policies contained in corporately issued standard manuals that apply to the functioning of the department.

  • Attends required in-services and completes assigned on-line modules.
  • Collaborates with the Medical Director in reviewing department Policy and Procedures annually and PRN, and makes written recommendations.
  • Department Inventory Control
  • Manages department inventory control program.

  • Maintains a written, on-going inventory control system of department supplies and equipment.
  • Monitors supply usage, price and quality of products; makes product / vendor recommendations to Executive Director.
  • Requisitions department supplies and equipment; inspects deliveries and invoices for accuracy; approves invoices and submits to Executive Director for review.
  • Conducts or assists with department inspections.
  • Department Inspections
  • Conducts departmental service and storage inspections on a regular basis to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, insurance requirements and facility standards.

  • Conducts quality control inspections of departmental work to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and facility standards.
  • Participates in local, state, federal and insurance inspections, in cooperative effort with the Executive Director, initiates deficiency corrections when necessary.
  • Infection Control and Safety
  • Manages department Infection Control and Safety programs.

  • Acts as Director of Infection Prevention and Control for the facility.
  • Inspects and evaluates on a periodic basis, with the Environmental Service Director or designee, physical plan conditions, making recommendations concerning relocation of equipment, re-allocation of space to improve sanitation, appearance, safety and work efficiency.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions or any conditions conducive to breeding insects, rodents or other vermin to Executive Director.
  • Monitors and enforces sanitation policies and procedures to ensure they are observed and followed, and that employees exhibiting signs of communicable disease are not on duty.
  • Directs and training of staff in isolation case techniques; monitors techniques closely when isolation case occurs.
  • Maintains hygienically safe methods for drug distribution in collaboration with the consultant pharmacist and federal, state and local laws.
  • Will be knowledge and understanding of the Volunteers of America Antibiotic Stewardship program utilizing the 7 core elements and ensure the facility is complying with the program.
  • Fire and Disaster Plans
  • Understands facility’s fire and disaster plans; follows established procedures during drills and actual emergencies.

  • Delivery of Nursing Services
  • Organizes and administers the delivery of nursing services and related ancillary services.

  • Develops, implements and maintains Nursing Service objectives, philosophy and standards of nursing practice and policies and procedures. Utilizes Point Right software to assist with monitoring Quality Measures, Re-Hospitalization rates and incorporates RADAR as a tool in the IDT meetings.
  • Analyzes and evaluates nursing care and related ancillary and therapeutic services rendered to improve quality of patient care and to plan the best utilization of staff time and activities.
  • Works toward the resolution of resident and family concerns; advises Executive Director of any special problems relating to care delivery.
  • Develops, monitors and maintains required and appropriate documentation on the residents’ medical records to include a multi-disciplinary plan of care.
  • Collaborates and consults with the residents’ attending physicians, Medical Director and outside consultants.
  • Makes daily patient rounds to assess quality of care being delivered.
  • Assists with approved research projects related to improving nursing care.
  • Reviews level-of-care determinations with the staff nurses.
  • Serves as a member of the Admissions Committee in the selection of prospective residents.
  • Functions as a resource person to the nursing staff relative to accepted standards of nursing practice.
  • Maintains awareness of community resources and health care agencies.
  • Assumes responsibility for Medical Evaluation studies where they are required by federal regulations.
  • Attends and assists with QAA / QAPI Committee utilizing QAA / QAPI process, Antibiotic Stewardship, Infection Prevention and Control Committee, Pharmaceutical Services Committee, including GDR reviews, Safety Committee, IDT Meetings, Memory Care Criteria Communities and any other type of medical review committee utilized by the facility.
