job_description.job_card.job_descriptionHelping to investigate and document work site raids, immigration sweeps, questionable enforcement tactics and unlawful detentions; Interviewing victims of and witnesses to immigration enforcement activities both in the community and in immigration detention facilities, which exist across the state with the largest being Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Clearfield County; Directing coalition members and volunteers to help with large investigations; Identifying and documenting unlawful stop, arrest, detention and / or removal practices for possible litigation; Providing paralegal-type support for immigrants’ rights litigation; Helping with client and witness communications; and Helping with document management. Working with ACLU staff to develop a computerized system to monitor real-time immigrant arrest, detention and removal activities by state, county, local and federal law enforcement agencies across Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; Collaborating with allied organizations and rapid response networks to complement and support their immigrant raids response and tracking operations. Attending coalition and community meetings to ensure the ACLU has timely and accurate information about immigration enforcement activities. Required Qualifications A bachelor's degree or significant job or volunteer experience working with recent immigrants; A passion for immigrant justice and strong understanding of immigrant community needs; Fluency in written and spoken Spanish; Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex information clearly; Strong writing skills; Compassionate, collaborative and culturally competent approach; Ability to stay organized, pay attention to details and manage time effectively; Strong computer skills and demonstrated experience using computer spreadsheets (such as Excel or Google Sheets) and / or databases; and Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends. Basic understanding of issues related to immigration law and / or constitutional rights; Experience being dependable and punctual and responsibly handling confidential information; Experience interviewing people to gather information; and Experience working as a paralegal, social worker or journalist. Compensation & Benefits This position is funded for one year, with the likelihood of extension. ACLU-PA offers paid time off and participation in an employee retirement account. The annual salary for the position is $60,000. This position is full-time, salaried, and nonexempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include a defined contribution plan with employer match; and 11 paid holidays. Location This position can be based in either our Philadelphia or Pittsburgh offices. Under the ACLU-PA’s current hybrid remote work policy, the Immigrants’ Rights Investigator will be permitted to work up to three days per week remotely. ACLU-PA has a COVID-19 vaccine mandate, and candidates receiving a job offer will be required to show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencing employment. The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania (ACLU-PA) seeks a motivated, organized, and detail-oriented full-time Immigrants’ Rights Investigator to help monitor, investigate and document immigrant detention and removal activity across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Immigrants’ Rights Investigator’s work will support potential impact litigation to address egregious and systemic violations of civil, constitutional and human rights.
This position involves tracking and investigating government agencies engaged in immigration enforcement, including state, county, local and federal law enforcement.
The Immigrants’ Rights Investigator will collaborate with allied coalition partners across the state as well as ACLU and affiliated lawyers. This fulltime position requires fluency in Spanish and a willingness to travel throughout the state.
It is funded for one year, with likelihood of extension.
