Sanitation Collector II / Back-up Driver
This position is listed as a Sanitation Collector II / Back-up Driver Performs unskilled manual work in the collection and disposal of garbage, recycling materials and refuse. Employees in this class perform manual labor involving the collection and disposal of solid waste including residential and commercial recycling and garbage. Employees work as a member of a three-person crew led by a driver in loading and unloading solid waste materials throughout the Town. Employees ride on the side of the truck and walk extensively over established routes to collect materials by dumping curbside cans into rear loading compactor truck utilizing a hydraulic lift. Employees are subject to the hazards of sanitation work including working in outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to noise, vibration, moving mechanical parts, atmospheric conditions, oils, skin irritants, and narrow passageways. Work is subject to OSHA final standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under the daily leadership of the Sanitation Equipment Operator and regular supervision of the supervisor who reviews work by observation and complaint calls to determine the effectiveness of collection duties, and citizen satisfaction.
Sanitation Collector 2 performs as a sanitation collector but has the additional responsibility of filling in as a backup driver when an Equipment Operator is out or unable to work a given day. Works as a member of a solid waste garbage and recycling collection crew. Walks along the streets to collect solid waste materials; rides on the side of the truck to route; walks and collects cans from both sides of the street; empties garbage cans into a rear loading packer truck utilizing the hydraulic lift; assists in emptying load at the sanitary landfill, recycling center or other sites. Assists in washing and cleaning of sanitation trucks, sprays trucks with disinfectant and hoses down. Picks up trash beside the road with the picker or pitch fork. Wears personal protective equipment. Assembles garbage and recycling cans. Leaves door hangers at homes with materials that cannot be collected or needing can repair. Maintains good relationship with the public through respect to individual property. Maintains simple records of work activities. Helps other crews and divisions as needed. Performs related duties as required.
Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in the collecting, loading, and unloading of garbage and recycling materials. Knowledge of safe operation of truck hydraulic lifts and compactor mechanisms. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions of refuse collection work. Some knowledge of Town solid waste policies. Ability in to perform heavy manual labor at a steady pace and in varying weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to cooperate and work as a team member in carrying out assignments.
Physical Requirements : Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to operate equipment and distinguish safety hazards which may affect self and others, determine neatness of work, and perform mechanical work. Desirable Education and Experience : Graduation from high school and some related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Class A or Class B CDL is required for this position.
The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications. The hours of this position will vary based on the workload.
