Overview

Position at Sumitomo Electric Lightwave Corp. The Engineering Assistant works with the area process engineer to assure equipment is in proper operating condition, troubleshoot and correct process and production problems, and support process improvements, training, and documentation to meet output and quality goals.

Responsibilities

  • 1.0 Production and technical responsibilities : Analyze daily product and process reports to identify and resolve equipment or product problems; inspect dies, tooling and machine parts for abnormalities.
  • Evaluate processes to identify potential problem areas, investigate and implement new equipment, isolate problem areas, and issue maintenance requests.
  • Evaluate cable product compliance with specifications; adjust process conditions to improve output and efficiency.
  • Set up, calibrate and assemble equipment for new products or processes; ensure proper flows, tolerances, safety features, and quality control prior to processes.
  • Order, receive, test and install machine parts; meet with vendors about new equipment for cabling processes.
  • Communicate with production staff and engineering teams to identify problems and train in new processes and specifications.
  • Enforce operating instructions; distribute controlled documents and maintain ISO-related documents; update operation and training manuals as changes occur.
  • Record required information in the data collection system for quality and production status.
  • Provide training to assigned staff and collaborate with the area process engineer to improve processes or product design; ensure design criteria meet industrial standards.
  • Work with product design teams when design changes occur.

Quality Responsibilities

  • Check processes for adherence to established quality parameters and verify accuracy of indication sheets.
  • Monitor and adjust inking and ribbon processes to ensure color, tolerances, and flow meet quality standards.
  • Evaluate equipment and product for defects during production and adjust processes to minimize issues.
  • Reporting and Paperwork

  • Assist in documenting product and process problems and corrective actions; compile data on yield, output, scrap, and trends for preventive measures.
  • Assist trial data and EPO reports; share technical information with design and manufacturing staff.
  • People and Safety

  • Participate as a training / certification team member for area processes; coach production staff as needed; contribute to Process Improvement Team.
  • Observe work areas for unsafe conditions, recommend changes, intervene when problems are noted to promote safety, and read Safety Data Sheets for hazardous materials.
  • Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other related duties as assigned; participate in Model Shop Activities (5S).
  • Instruments, Tools and Equipment

  • Area production equipment and related tools; precision measuring instruments; data systems for reporting; hand tools; calipers, pyrometers, manometers and other gauges; CAD for floor equipment changes.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to analyze production problems quickly and determine changes to maintain specifications and schedules.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and fiber optic systems; ability to read blueprints, diagrams, and engineering reports.
  • Ability to use arithmetic, fractions, decimals, basic statistics; basic trigonometry and analytical geometry.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to operational processes.
  • Proficiency with computer data analysis, report generation, and design changes; ability to develop and communicate SOPs and troubleshooting guidelines.
  • Ability to respond to alarms while maintaining workflow to meet production goals; ability to clearly instruct employees in safe operating procedures.
  • Willingness to work as a committed team member and to learn basic material science related to the material used.
  • Education and Experience

  • High school graduation required; one year of technical training in equipment and process maintenance or equivalent; 3.5 years of on-the-job training progressing through the processes in the area of work.
