Summary :

Research is a core mission for UNC Health and Investigational Drug Services (IDS) is at the epicenter of cutting-edge trials. IDS manages the distributional operations and billing of over 500 trials. There is a full-service General and Oncology Investigational Drug Services team onsite at UNC Medical Center located at Central Operations in Morrisville, North Carolina with supporting satellites across the UNC System including North Carolina Cancer Hospital (NCCH) that prepares and dispenses investigational therapies for patients being treated at UNC Health. These therapies are administered at the Medical Center or other system locations.

Position Summary :

The team is seeking a highly motivated pharmacist to work in the IDS Pharmacy, General or Oncology, providing high-level customer service to patients at UNC Health Care. The focus of this position is to evaluate and implement clinical trial protocols and optimize drug distribution services for investigational drugs undergoing clinical trials within the UNC Medical Center and Health System Clinics. Vestigo is the research computer system utilized for studies and this pharmacist will be required to become proficient in using this system for inventory and labeling of the products dispensed. This individual will also be responsible for providing experiential instruction to Doctor of Pharmacy Students and UNC Medical Center pharmacy residents as able.

Responsibilities :

• Read, evaluate, verify, and implement clinical trial protocols in the dispensing and administration of investigational drugs and respond to questions from study teams and sponsors.
• Serve as the primary pharmacist for research protocols as assigned, point-of-contact for IDS-related study issues, and IDS liaison in research teams (i.e., particularly research coordinators) for assigned protocols.
• Revise protocols as required by amendments or study updates and communicate with study teams regarding protocol.
• Oversee the preparation, dispensing, and storage of medications including investigational drugs and placebo using standard formulas, processes, and procedures as required.
• Complete required documentation such as notations in the medical record and protocol documentation.
• Manage inventory, monitor storage and temperature conditions, maintain accountability and data records through Vestigo, and monitor visits and audits, as needed.
• Counsel patients and appropriate family members regarding pharmaceutical care issues as requested or required.
• Direct workflow of the shift and supervise pharmacy technicians, students, and / or volunteers present during that shift. Train IDS staff and ancillary pharmacy staff as needed on new protocols. Precept pharmacy students and / or residents as required.
• Adhere to federal, state, local and institutional policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
• Identify and participate in process improvement opportunities
• Receives prescriptions, interprets prescriptions, and reviews the patient's medication profile / history. Clarifies incomplete, inaccurate, or contraindicated prescriptions with the prescriber, nurse, or other health professional, as appropriate. Identifies and intervenes on problems related to the medication needs of the patient.
• Utilizes and analyzes patient data to provide optimal drug therapy recommendations. Assesses the patient's medication therapy regimen and makes appropriate clinical interventions with the provider. Performs protocol-driven clinical services such as IV to oral dosing, stewardship activities, etc
• Compounds and oversees the preparation and dispensing of medications including sterile products using standard formulas, processes and procedures as required.
• Complies with the medication formulary, and therapeutic substitution and other programs designed to optimize drug therapy while minimizing cost as required.
• Completes required documentation such as notations in the medical record, controlled substances documentation, cash register reconciliation, competency, etc. as required.
• Counsels patients and appropriate family members regarding pharmaceutical care issues as requested or required.
• Directs workflow of the shift and supervises pharmacy technicians, students, and / or volunteers present during that shift.
• Adheres to federal, state, local and institutional policies, procedures, standards and regulations.
• Identifies and participates in process improvement opportunities.
• Precepts students, residents and participates in training new pharmacy staff as required.
