Plumbing Technician

The incumbent in this position provides patients, families of patients, visitors, and medical center employees with a pleasant, comfortable, safe, functional, and aesthetically attractive environment consistent with the standards established by Georgetown University Hospital, the District of Columbia Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. Under minimal supervision the incumbent performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing, medical gases and steam heating systems and related equipment. Maintains effective communications and working relationships with customers. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Inspects, installs, repairs and replaces pipe fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the plumbing, medical gases and steam heating systems and components of the medical center.

Cuts, threads, brazes and welds to repair or replace pipe, fittings, or related items associated with steam, condensate, water, air, drainage, medical gases and sprinkler systems.

Performs repairs and scheduled maintenance on the following equipment, including pumps, autoclaves, stills and other equipment relating to steam or water systems.

Performs repairs and scheduled maintenance on medical gas equipment including negative-positive gases, vacuum, and compressed air.

Designs improvements in plumbing systems and related equipment, prepares drawings and schematics, and estimates time and materials.

Constructs and installs improvements, inspects completed work and documents time and materials utilized.

Performs work according to established codes and department procedures. Implements safe work practices.

Participates in snow removal assignments.

Accurately tracks and records all tasks performed through work orders.

Records and reports any maintenance needs that are identified and that cannot be performed within designated time limits or personal skills levels.

Consults with management to determine special maintenance needs within the medical center or concerning work of longer duration, systems maintenance, work beyond capabilities, projects, or other facilities needs.

Works cooperatively with other medical center departments such as Environmental Services, Materials Management, Clinical Engineering, and coordinates to provide services to customers.

Assists in the development of work standards, policies and procedures. Participates in the identification and clarification of scope of maintenance tasks and responsibility.

Completes scheduled and assigned tasks under normal conditions within prescribed time parameters with accuracy and consistency.

Makes effective use of departmental / medical center resources (time, material, equipment, etc) so as to minimize waste and prevent damage.

Presents a professional image at all times as demonstrated by a high degree of integrity, technical knowledge, personal appearance (neat, clean, in uniform and wears name tag), equipment / tools cleanliness and orderliness and orderliness and cleanliness / order lined of mechanical areas work areas and shops.

Maintains a good work attendance and punctuality record in accordance with department policies.

Restocks equipment and supplies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or GED required or equivalent (GED) required

Experience

5-7 years relevant experience required

Licenses and Certifications

PLUMBER - Licensed Plumber DC plumbers license preferred and current state licensure (Maryland, Virginia, etc.) acceptable. required and Medical Gas certification preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Broad knowledge of plumbing practices, working knowledge of general tools used.

Good knowledge of occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the trade.

Good problem-solving abilities.

Ability to design and interpret prints, drawings and schematics.
