The Director of Student Activities will provide direction and leadership for the Student Activities functional area of the Student Center. This role will supervise three full-time staff members and student assistants, serve as the advisor to the Student Association, and oversee overarching policies and procedures for student clubs. The Director will manage the Student Activities budget, function as the approver for club expense reports, and lead OwlNest, Rice's online student engagement platform.

The ideal candidate has experience supervising full-time staff and advising a complex organization that works with student policy issues and student governance. Prior experience with student engagement platforms, club registration, risk management, facilitation of leadership programming, and budgeting will aid a successful candidate.

Hybrid position : This role combines both in-office and remote work to provide flexibility and support collaboration. The position would work one day remotely and four days in-office during the academic year, and two days remotely and three days in-office during the summer.

Hiring range : $85,500 - $88,500 annually, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Minimum requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 4+ years of experience

  • Advising experience related to a large, complex student organization
  • Experience with budgetary oversight and reconciling expenses
  • Proven ability to supervise professional staff
  • Ability to manage multiple programmatic areas
  • Proven ability to direct student leadership programming and large-scale events
  • Proven ability to train students and staff
  • Proven ability to interpret and uphold university policy
  • Experience advising high-level college student leaders in a one-on-one setting
  • Proven ability to apply student development and learning outcomes theories
  • Ability to direct assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to make high-level administrative decisions
  • Preferences :

  • Master's degree in higher education, student personnel administration, or related field
  • Experience with student engagement platform management
  • Experience advising student government
  • Experience with club registration
  • Experience working in a university setting
  • Essential functions :

  • Supports department, division, and university mission, vision, and goals
  • Oversees the Student Activities functional area of the Student Center
  • Develops, updates, and enforces operating policies and procedures for Student Activities
  • Supervises three professional staff
  • Advises the Student Association, undergraduate student government and all of its leaders
  • Develops, plans, and implements programming and outreach for club student leaders and the campus community
  • Serves as lead for OwlNest, Rice's student engagement software
  • Oversees budget planning and management for Student Activities
  • Oversees undergraduate alcohol event risk management
  • Directs leadership and student development through functional areas and direct advisement of clubs and programs
  • Manages assessment, marketing, and outreach for Student Activities
  • Serves as liaison with various campus offices and community constituents
  • Additional functions :

  • Serves as backup for direct reports' duties when necessary
  • Supervises the financial management for over 300 organizations
  • Supports university initiatives and programming
  • Provides consultation and advising to support student organizations
  • Attendance at after-hours Student Association and departmental events on or off campus will be required
