About Smith & Oby
Smith & Oby is a trusted leader in mechanical, plumbing, and building automation solutions. For decades, we have partnered with commercial, industrial, and institutional clients to design, build, and maintain high-performing systems that keep facilities running efficiently and reliably. From hospitals and office complexes to manufacturing plants and schools, we combine engineering expertise with hands-on execution to deliver results our customers can depend on.
Position Overview
We are seeking an Entry-Level Controls Engineer to join our Building Automation Systems (BAS) team. This opportunity is ideal for recent graduates or engineers with 0–2 years of experience who are eager to apply their technical skills in a practical, customer-facing role.
As part of our team, you’ll gain exposure to every stage of a BAS project—from design and programming to installation, commissioning, and ongoing service. This role blends technical problem-solving with in-field execution and customer support. Success at Smith & Oby requires a strong work ethic, initiative, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across disciplines while also taking ownership of individual responsibilities.
This is an on-site, field-based role with frequent travel to customer sites in the Greater Cleveland area and occasional out-of-town training or projects (up to 10%).
Key Responsibilities
Assist in the design, programming, and commissioning of Building Automation Systems.
Create and modify BAS graphics for user interfaces.
Perform bench testing, troubleshooting, and diagnostics on control hardware / software.
Support the installation and startup of BAS equipment in the field.
Conduct service calls and provide technical support to field technicians.
Collaborate with HVAC technicians, electricians, and other trades during project implementation.
Communicate effectively with customers, management, and project teams to ensure success.
Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, project progress, and work performed.
Take responsibility for assigned projects—from planning through completion.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Computer Engineering (or related field).
0–2 years of experience in engineering, automation, or controls (BAS experience a plus).
Basic knowledge of HVAC systems and control principles (preferred).
Familiarity with programming or scripting languages (preferred but not required).
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.
Positive attitude, adaptability, and eagerness to learn.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Comfortable working in customer facilities and field environments.
Work Environment & Travel
On-site role based in the Greater Cleveland area (not remote / hybrid).
Up to 90% local travel for customer visits, commissioning, and installations.
Up to 10% out-of-town travel for training or special projects.
What We Offer
Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
Structured training and mentorship from senior engineers.
Hands-on exposure to multiple BAS technologies and project types.
Growth opportunities within automation engineering and beyond.
A collaborative, team-oriented culture that values initiative, responsibility, and problem-solving.
