Job Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Pediatric Psychiatric Unit, requiring at least 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience and a ME or compact RN license.

Responsibilities

  • Work in a free-standing acute inpatient facility on the Psychiatric Unit for both pediatric and adult patients
  • Pediatric patients are ages 5-18, adults are 18+ including geriatric
  • Common pediatric diagnoses include eating disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and gender dysphoria
  • Adult diagnoses include schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, and anxiety
  • Shifts are 12 hours, 7AM–7PM, with every other weekend required and no on-call
  • Floating between pediatric and adult psychiatric units is required
  • RN to patient ratios are 1 : 5-6 during the day, 1 : 13 at night with resource support and psych techs on shift
  • Cerner is used for charting and Pyxis for medication management
  • Patient care includes both voluntary and involuntary psychiatric admissions who are medically cleared
  • Traditional medical and psychiatric care provided along with specialized therapies such as pet therapy and group sessions
  • Seclusion rooms are used as needed for patient safety
  • Occasional care for substance use disorder or detox patients if medically cleared
  • Team support includes nurse supervisors, nurse managers, psych techs, contract phlebotomists, nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, and security
  • Orientation consists of one week of day shifts, followed by regular 12-hour shifts
  • Holiday coverage will be on a rotating basis
  • Accepts first-time travelers
  • Scrubs must be any solid, professional color
  • Heavy snow conditions can be expected during winter
  • Requirements

  • Active ME or compact RN license required
  • Minimum 1 year of behavioral health nursing experience required
  • BLS certification required
  • Pediatric behavioral health experience preferred; manager approval needed if not present
  • Experience with de-escalation, physical restraints (no chemical restraints), and medication passes
  • Comfortable leading group therapy sessions and completing documentation
  • Must not have worked in a permanent capacity at any Northern Light Health Hospital
  • Must reside 100+ miles South / Southwest of Bangor, ME to be considered for travel pay
  • Flu vaccination required for all assignments starting 9 / 30 / 2024 or later; only medical exemptions are considered
  • MOAB training is provided onsite during orientation
