Purpose of Position

Reporting to the VP Land - Minerals, the Landman will be responsible for all aspects of oil and gas development and contract administration associated with the 2.1 million acres of Permanent University Fund mineral estate. This position supports and develops relationships with University Lands departments and staff to responsibly administer leases and surface compliance related to mineral development on PUF lands. The Landman will report to the VP Land - Minerals and indirectly to the SVP of Land for University Lands, and will provide information and summaries to the executive team.

Essential Functions

• Responsibilities include supporting the development of the mineral estate through leasing, negotiating oil and gas agreements, drafting agreements based on negotiated deal terms and UL practices, supporting Land Administration ownership records and lease terminations.
• Independently negotiate, draft, and finalize oil and gas agreements related to the operation and development of PUF minerals (e.g., Oil and Gas Leases, Drilling and Development Agreements, Production Sharing Agreements, and Contract for Development Agreements); identify opportunities to update form agreements and ensure they align with industry practices.
• Establish and manage document management processes for conformity / cleanup of all agreements related to PUF minerals; communicate terms to other departments; prepare contract / executive summaries and deal tracking reports; keep executive management informed of land strategy and agreements.
• Identify the need for end-of-life processes for Development Agreements and leases; evaluate lease language and relevant rules; draft release documents as needed for filings of record.
• Ensure compliance with oil and gas-related agreements (offsets, cessation of production, lease extensions, payment dates, shut-in monitoring) and understand implied covenants and enforcement rights.
• Use industry and technical expertise to identify opportunities, resolve conflicts, and facilitate relationships between lessees and surface and mineral estates.
• Maintain positive external relationships as a representative of University Lands with industry participants, surface lessees, grazing lessees, trade associations, and regulatory bodies.
• Other duties as assigned.

Additional Information

The retirement plan is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to a minimum of 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. Participation in TRS is mandatory. A background check will be conducted on candidates under final consideration, which may include criminal history, employment verification, education verification, references check, and motor vehicle records check.
