Position Available : This position is available as soon as possible. There is the possibility of a hybrid work schedule for faculty, determined through conversation and approval by the faculty supervisor based on unit needs, but as a residential campus all faculty are expected to have an on-site presence. This is a 100%-time, permanent, twelve-month tenure-system appointment in the University Library.

Position Summary : The Grainger Engineering Library Information Center (GELIC) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library is seeking an entrepreneurial, collaborative, innovative, self-starting and intellectually curious individual to serve as the Bioengineering and Engineering Medical Innovation (BEMI) Librarian, liaising with the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering department. Reporting to the Head of Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, the BEMI Librarian will work in collaboration with other faculty and staff of GELIC to advance services, initiatives, and partnerships as determined by the UIUC University Library and GELIC strategic goals. The BEMI Librarian will work with the Biomedicine Liaison to engage with faculty, researchers and students affiliated with Carle Illinois College of Medicine and the Grainger College of Engineering Bioengineering department through instruction, research translation, clinical librarianship practice, reference and consultations, systematic reviews and meta-analysis, medical and biomedical informatics, scholarly communication and data management. The BEMI Librarian will work with other GELIC liaisons to serve the Grainger College of Engineering. The BEMI will work collaboratively with University Library faculty that support disciplines with an innovation focus, including liaisons for the Gies College of Business, School of Information Sciences (iSchool), College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Agriculture to support innovation. The Bioengineering and Engineering Medical Innovation Librarian will conduct research and publication to extend the library and information science body of knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Build relationships with the faculty and medical students of Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and the faculty and undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students of Grainger College of Engineering, with particular focus on the Bioengineering department, to advance curricular innovations, support research and discovery, and support student success.
  • Develop innovative services and outreach to Grainger College of Engineering, including the Department of Bioengineering and Carle Illinois College of Medicine based upon relationships and needs assessments that meet articulated and unstated needs of the stakeholders, identify trends and changes in that discipline, and innovate new services, outreach and instruction to improve research and educational outcomes.
  • Provide support for evidence-based practice and research.
  • Consult with stakeholders to improve research through the implementation of best practices such as systematic reviews and meta-analysis, research data management, open access publishing, grant development and other innovative research services.
  • Consult with stakeholders to support innovation initiatives.
  • Participate in initiatives of the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center.
  • Maintain an active research pipeline that advances the discipline of library and information science.
  • Participate in service to the profession via both internal and external opportunities.
  • Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service and collaboration with national colleagues, organizations, and consortia.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be able to exercise independent judgment and participate in collaborative endeavors.

Required :

  • ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and / or Information Science or equivalent degree.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and providing instructional interventions for the STEM disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with diverse groups and populations in the delivery of educational programs.
  • Evidence of the ability to conduct scholarly research and work toward the requirements for promotion and tenure.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly in person and in writing.
  • Preferred :

  • Experience providing library support to engineering and / or health sciences disciplines in an academic setting.
  • Experience providing reference or research support services in an academic library setting.
  • Experience in the foundational concepts and services of research data management.
  • Experience conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
