job_description.job_card.job_descriptionMinimum age : 19 years. High school graduate or equivalent as determined by the department. Not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, or have a dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces. Certain exceptions apply as described in statute. Abide by fingerprinting and background investigations and other screening requirements for personnel. Execute and submit an affidavit of application; adhere to provisions as required; affidavit may be considered an official statement under law. Must be certified in accordance with the department direct care training policy within 180 days of employment; top-ranking candidates may be required to take and pass assessments. Valid driver's license required; if hired with an out-of-state license, Florida license must be obtained within 30 days of hire. Knowledge : Department policies and procedures; care, custody and control of youth; facility operating procedures; safety procedures; hygiene and housekeeping. Skills : Recognizing signs of potential suicide or depression; addressing youth issues. Ability : Determine appropriate level of use of force; provide constructive feedback; prepare and maintain reports; perform arithmetic; communicate effectively with youth, co-workers, supervisors, and the public. 104 hours of paid vacation annually, 96 hours of paid sick leave annually with unlimited accrual, 9 paid holidays, and 1 personal day each year. 6 paid credit hours per term at Florida colleges and universities; eligible for student loan debt forgiveness program. Responsibilities
- As a detention officer, you are the first DJJ employee to interact with juvenile offenders. Your primary responsibility is to ensure public safety by providing a safe and secure environment for youth in a structured setting, while promoting dignity and respect.
- Demonstrate leadership, coaching, mentoring, and a desire to work with youth.
- Support the department's goal to treat each youth as an individual by providing the right services, at the right time, to shape youth into productive citizens.

Minimum Biweekly Rate of Pay : $1,676.76 (In accordance with current spending restrictions; internal promotions may be at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% above the employee's current rate, whichever is higher.)
985.66 FLORIDA STATUTE REQUIREMENT : Be at least 19 years of age; high school graduate or equivalent; no felony or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions as described in statute; background checks and fingerprinting required.
Special Notes : DJJ facilities operate 24 / 7 / 365; shifts include evenings, weekends, holidays, and rotating schedules. Pre-employment checks, drug screening, and other screening requirements apply. E-VERIFY participation is required.
