This position is in the Public Works Department, Parks Division and will work under the supervision of the Roads & Grounds Supervisor. This position is in the General Services Bargaining Unit (GSU) and subject to the terms and conditions of employment as specified in the GSU Memorandum of Understanding and the City's Personnel Policies & Procedures Manual. Definition : Under immediate supervision (Parks Maintenance Worker I) or general supervision (Parks Maintenance Worker II), to perform a variety of duties involved in the construction and maintenance of parks, park buildings, equipment, tools, and facilities.

Distinguishing Characteristics : Parks Maintenance Worker I This is the entry-level in the Parks Maintenance Worker class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the Parks Maintenance Worker II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Parks Maintenance Worker II This is the full journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the Parks Maintenance Worker I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the Parks Maintenance Worker II level are normally filled by advancement from the Parks Maintenance Worker I level. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the Parks Maintenance Worker II level.

Supervision Exercised : Parks Maintenance Worker I Exercises no supervision. Parks Maintenance Worker II May exercise functional and technical supervision over lower-level maintenance staff.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties :

• Perform the full range of turf maintenance duties; water, mow, weed, trim, aerate, renovate and fertilize turf.
• Perform the full range of shrub and flower bed maintenance; plant, water, fertilize, and maintain landscaped areas including bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; control weeds.
• Trim and prune bushes, trees, and shrubs to provide clearance of sidewalks and signs, as well as to ensure the continued health of the bush, tree, or shrub.
• Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of the irrigation system; change and adjust heads; maintain controllers; assist in irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.
• Operate the full range of grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment including dump trucks, mowers, edgers, blowers, tractors, loaders, and hand and power tools; maintain tools and equipment and perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Maintain play equipment, picnic tables, and other related parks equipment and facilities; install and repair playground equipment, fences, and other related parks equipment and facilities.
• Assist in pest control measures; measure, mix, and apply chemicals to trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers to control weeds, insects, and plant diseases.
• Assist in the removal of fallen trees, stumps, fallen limbs, and related debris resulting from storm damage and general conditions.
• Identify maintenance needs and safety hazards; report needs to appropriate staff.
• Paint park buildings; remove graffiti in parks and in other areas.
• Rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, and other facilities; pick up trash.
• Clean and maintain restrooms; stock restrooms with necessary supplies; repair toilets, urinals, and faucets.
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
• Assist in the construction of various projects; assist in the maintenance of roads and parking lots; perform traffic control.
• Assist in the set-up and removal of equipment needed for special events.
• Deal courteously and tactfully with the public in response to inquiries and complaints; provide information regarding rules and regulations of the parks and other facilities.

Job Related and Essential Qualifications : Parks Maintenance Worker I Knowledge of : Basic methods, techniques and tools used in the construction and maintenance of parks, landscaped areas, and related facilities. Uses, purposes and operating characteristics of basic parks maintenance tools and equipment. Occupational hazards and necessary precautions applicable to assigned work. Safe driving principles and practices. Skill to : Learn to use, operate and maintain chemical spraying equipment in performance of chemical spraying duties. Learn to operate a variety of mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner. Learn to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Ability to : Learn City policies, procedures and codes related to grounds maintenance. Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations. Learn plant and animal pests that are harmful to plants. Learn chemical pesticides and herbicides and their use. Learn the operating characteristics of and repair principles used on irrigation systems. Learn the watering requirements for lawns, trees and plants and various types of soil. Perform park maintenance, landscaping, reconstruction and repair work. Perform minor or routine maintenance and repair of recreation equipment. Deal tactfully with the public. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines : Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be : Experience : Some grounds maintenance, construction, and repair experience. Training : Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. License or Certificate : Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Special Requirements : Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment : Ability to sit, stand, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.; exposure to noise, outdoors, confining workspace, chemicals, dust, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites.

Parks Maintenance Worker II In addition to the qualifications for a Parks Maintenance Worker I : Knowledge of : Methods, techniques and tools used in the construction and maintenance of parks, landscaped areas, and related facilities. Uses, purposes, and operating characteristics of general construction tools and equipment. Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations. Plant and animal pests that are harmful to plants. Chemical pesticides and herbicides and their use. Operating characteristics of and repair principles used on irrigation systems. Watering requirements for lawns, trees and plants and various types of soil. City policies, procedures, and codes related to grounds maintenance. Skill to : Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment. Ability to : Perform park maintenance, landscaping, reconstruction and repair work independently. Perform preventive maintenance on equipment. Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics. Experience and Training Guidelines : Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be : Experience : Two years of experience in the maintenance, construction, and repair of parks or related facilities. Training : Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. License or Certificate : Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
