JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE
Must be able to perform technical work in the field or office, requiring the knowledge of valves, leak and atmospheric corrosion survey of above and underground company natural gas facilities and be able to qualify to do the following and related work as assigned.
ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conduct gas leakage surveys using instruments approved by Company, properly complete follow company approved leak grading procedures to prioritize work orders in the field
- Conduct atmospheric corrosion surveys and properly complete CFR 192 documentation on all above ground gas containing assets
- Conduct valve survey inspections on primary and secondary gas valves
- Operate and maintain instruments used in valve survey and leak survey related work
- Keep necessary records and make reports pertaining to leakage and corrosion control and valve inspections
- Perform general maintenance on piping installations including but not limited to tightening fittings or applying tape for above ground meter set leaks and below ground valve flange leaks
- Respond to emergency gas situations taking control of the scene, establishing safety perimeter and evacuation zone, determine procedure and perform safe gas shutdown.
- Work closely with state, parish, city, other utilities, and contractors to ensure proper and safe excavation practices are performed around gas facilities.
- Understand Company construction practices and maintenance procedures
- Operate Company trucks, automobiles and machinery, including specialized valve torque machinery.
- Demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities on specific task covered of the position for the purpose of complying with Department of Transportation, Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration.
- Properly document work performed either electronically or manually that is susceptible to frequent PHMSA audits.
- Utilize company software programs to monitor for compliance follow on work orders and ensure compliance with work order commit dates with Operations team
- Actively participate and produce documentation for PHMSA CFR192 audits to ensure zero citations
- Be able to work alone or with a partner efficiently and demonstrate the ability to route and plan work day-to-day in an optimized manner.
- Be able to accurately complete a time sheet.
- Direct the work of new employees, instruct and train new employees in all aspects of the job
- Be able to handle advanced troubleshooting activities as it is related to all aspects of the job
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High School diploma or equivalentMinimum experience required of the position
Mechanic I Level : Must have worked for at least 0 to 2 years in a natural gas utility or have had equivalent experience in related work.
Mechanic II Level : Must have worked for at least 2 to 4 years in a natural gas utility or have had equivalent experience in related work.
Senior Level : Must have worked for at least 4 years in a natural gas utility or have had equivalent experience in related work.
Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required of the position
Maintain automobile and truck driver's license, TWIC card or other applicable required license, background check, or ID required for the position.Must be experienced with computers, i.e. Microsoft Office.Have a working knowledge of gas distribution system.Know city streets and roads in rural areas.Have a thorough knowledge of the layout and characteristics of the distribution system, services and meters.Have a thorough knowledge of material and use of tools and equipment.Understand the basic theory of gas combustion and have a practical knowledge of the fundamentals involved in gas burning equipment, meters and regulators.Have a practical knowledge of operating and maintenance practices.Know companies’ safety rules, and approved methods of resuscitation, and be able to render practical first aid.Know the location of, and be able to operate, all the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil, gas, and other fires.Must have the ability to acquire and maintain skills required as technology evolves (examples such as, accessing electronic mapping information, collecting and interpreting electronic pipe locating and leaking detection information).Preferred Skills :
Knowledge of pipeline safety regulations, particularly regarding CFR 192Knowledge of performing natural gas leak detectionKnowledge of performing maintenance on valvesKnowledge of how to properly grade hazardous leak conditions and ensure public safetyAny certificates, licenses, etc. required for the position
Valid driver’s licensePreferred : Must reside within 45 road miles of the reporting location.Physical Requirements
Ability to detect presence of natural gas.Must have full use of mental and physical faculties.Must be able to walk long distances every day.Strength and endurance are adequate for arduous labor as circumstances may require.Able to operate a motor vehicle, including the ability to enter and exit vehicle unassisted.Able to perform on-site inspections.Able to operate a personal computer, either desktop or laptop.Able to sit for extended periods of time.Able to operate a copy machine, fax machine, calculator, telephone and other miscellaneous office equipment.Able to exert up to 50 Lbs. of force occasionally, and / or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push or otherwise move objects.Working Conditions
