Gastroenterology / Day Surgery
Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Gastroenterology and Day Surgery Department provides high-quality, patient-centered nursing care before, during, and after outpatient surgical and endoscopic procedures. The RN collaborates with physicians, anesthesia providers, and other healthcare staff to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care for patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Focuses on the overall care of patients by administering medications under the supervision of doctors and keep records of symptoms and progress.
Key Responsibilities
o Admit and prepare patients for procedures, ensuring proper identification, documentation, and consent.
o Conduct pre-procedure assessments, including medical history, allergies, vital signs, and readiness for anesthesia or sedation.
o Provide patient and family education regarding the procedure, expected outcomes, and post-operative care.
o Assist gastroenterologists and surgeons during endoscopic, colonoscopy, and minor surgical procedures.
o The Day Surgery RN will be the lead person to ensure that all instrument and sponge counts are correct for each procedure.
o Maintain sterile technique and assist with equipment setup, troubleshooting, and specimen handling.
o It is the responsibility of the Day Surgery RN to ensure there is adequate staff in the room for safe patient positioning.
o Assist anesthesia personnel when needed during the procedure.
o The Day Surgery RN will immediately notify the Charge Nurse, Manager or Director of any adverse effects or incidents that may occur during the surgical procedure.
o Day Surgery RN’s use considerable judgement in providing care in a wide variety of procedures.
o Educates patients and families about the procedures being performed.
o Provide safe recovery and discharge care in the recovery bay.
o Monitor and manage pain, nausea, bleeding, or other immediate post-operative concerns.
o Educate patients and families on discharge instructions, medications, dietary restrictions, and follow-up care.
o Maintain accurate, timely, and complete patient records in compliance with hospital policies.
o Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient safety and care outcomes.
o Uphold infection control and safety standards in all aspects of care.
o Participate in staff meetings, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.
o May be required to float to other areas of the hospital on an as needed basis.
Qualifications
o Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
o Ability to respond quickly in urgent / emergent situations.
o Excellent communication and patient education skills.
o Proficiency with endoscopic and surgical equipment preferred.
o Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
