Description :
The Nuclear Medicine Technologist performs nuclear medicine procedures, PET, and theranostic procedures on ambulatory and hospital patients as requested by a physician or other licensed provider.
These procedures are performed for the diagnosis of disease and injury in accordance with established protocols.
Quality assurance is a key responsibility, ensuring high-quality nuclear medicine, PET, and theranostic procedures are completed in a timely manner.
The technologist systematically evaluates the quality of imaging procedures and follows established standards and procedures.
Maintaining equipment is essential, which includes performing quality control as required by imaging manufacturers.
The technologist collaborates with engineers and physicists to ensure optimal operational capabilities of equipment.
Communicating with patients to identify service requirements and establish rapport is vital.
The technologist instructs and communicates with patients and their family regarding the test to be performed, assessing the patient's ability to tolerate the exam.
Explaining procedures thoroughly helps to put patients at ease.
The technologist protects patients and team members by adhering to safety requirements, infection-control protocols, and techniques.
Preparation for procedures includes positioning the patient and adjusting immobilization devices as needed.
Using proper aseptic or sterile techniques when performing invasive procedures and maintaining hand hygiene is essential.
Safeguarding everyone involved by adhering to all radiation safety requirements and policies is a key responsibility.
The technologist verifies that the correct radioactive drug has been selected for the exam or treatment.
Screening patients for pregnancy status is necessary before starting any exam or treatment.
Safely administering radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications is done per protocol.
Educating patients about radiation safety techniques pre and post-exam is important.
The technologist follows radiation disposal guidelines rigorously.
Reporting issues to leadership or the appropriate department and supporting the maintenance of supplies inventory are part of the role.
Collaboration with colleagues, nursing partners, medical staff, and radiologists ensures accurate patient care and image transfer.
An ability to observe changes in patients’ medical conditions and communicate those changes effectively is crucial.
Maintaining current knowledge and continued education for all age groups specific to the department is required.
Providing services timely, accurately, and cost-efficiently in compliance with established standards is essential.
The technologist is expected to perform tasks independently without the need for routine oversight.
Maintaining a calm and helpful attitude, even under stress, is necessary for resolving issues.
Ensuring customer satisfaction involves limiting wait times and providing courteous service.
The technologist may serve as a trainer to new team members and students.
Adhering to policies, procedures, and workflows related to imaging and record management is mandatory.
