Field Application Engineer (Automation / Mechatronics)

Location : Remote in Chicago, IL - Southwest Metro Preferred

Type : Temp-to-Hire

Pay : $35 - $45 / hour DOE + Overtime Eligible

Travel : 75-80% (Mix of Day Trips and Flights)

Start Date : Immediate

About the Position

A growing industrial technology firm is seeking a hands-on Field Application Engineer to support deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automation systems across customer sites. This is a client-facing role with heavy travel and a strong focus on real-time issue resolution, system optimization, and post-installation support.

When not traveling, you'll contribute remotely to project work, technical documentation, and internal process improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide onsite support for system installations, repairs, and preventive maintenance
  • Respond to critical system issues with next-day or same-day travel as needed
  • Train operators and technical staff on equipment usage and troubleshooting protocols
  • Document service activities and recurring technical issues with clarity and detail
  • Collaborate with engineering and product teams to relay field insights and improve system reliability
  • Support internal tasks during non-travel periods (e.g., documentation, light CAD work, process improvements)

Qualifications

  • 2+ years' experience in field service, industrial maintenance, or automation support
  • Proficient with diagnostic tools, meters, and standard mechanical / electrical troubleshooting methods
  • Familiarity with reading basic scripts or logs (Python, C++, or ROS exposure ideal)
  • Ability to produce clear, technical documentation
  • Strong communication skills under pressure; calm and professional in front of clients
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record required
  • Able to travel on short notice, including potential same-day departures

    • Preferred Skills

  • Experience with PLCs and industrial control systems
  • CAD software familiarity (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar)
  • Background in robotics or automation OEM environments

    • Travel and Work Expectations

  • Average monthly travel : 75-80%, with some fluctuation
  • Regional day trips and overnight flights based on client needs
  • Weekend travel may occur; flexible weekday time-off is provided in exchange
  • Urgent field requests may require response within 30 minutes and rapid deployment
  • Travel hours and overtime are fully compensated
