POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Center Coordinator, Prevention Navigators work in the Promise SSL afterschool programs at Granite Park Junior High and / or Olene Walker Elementary, with support and guidance from the State Opioid Prevention (SOP) Manager. Prevention Navigators work directly with youth and families from diverse backgrounds to provide prevention activities during the afterschool program while acting as a positive adult role model, coach, and mentor; providing positive leadership and establishing a structured program to give PSSL program participants the stability and nurturing environment they need for growth and success.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

1. Afterschool Program Prevention Facilitation (approximately 14 hrs / week) :

  • Become familiar with, select prepared, write new, and implement hands-on and project based lesson plans and curriculum related to youth prevention.
  • Deliver at least 2 evidence-based prevention lessons per week from designated curriculum.
  • Lead and supervise groups of youth and address behavior issues when they arise.
  • Collect accurate attendance and activity participation data.
  • Communicate successes and challenges regarding youth to direct supervisors.
  • Conduct pre- and post-surveys according to grant requirements.
  • Support daily programming operational needs (serving snack / dinner, maintaining cleanliness of program spaces, etc.)

2. Participate in GASMP Coalition Projects, Outreach, and Referrals (approximately 4 hrs / week) :

  • Data collection and organization.
  • Monthly reporting, via scheduled check-in meetings and / or Coalition Meetings.
  • Resource navigation and support with relevant referrals with the afterschool program participant's families and local community members.
  • Community classes, events, and workshop support.
  • Hold a role within the GASMP Coalition, attending and participating in monthly meetings.
  • 3. Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Associate's Degree, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience preferred.
  • Experience working with youth, afterschool, or prevention science environment preferred.
  • South Salt Lake community members and / or those with knowledge of South Salt Lake demographics are strongly encouraged to apply.

    NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    1. Knowledge of operation and techniques used in an afterschool program setting.

    2. Willingness to be trained in First Aid and CPR.

    3. Ability to manage multiple tasks independently.

    4. Skill in word processing, spreadsheets, office machine usage and the operation of computers.

    5. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, and the public.

    6. Ability and willingness to become fully licensed through the Office of Child Care Licensing (on the job training).
