Facilities Director

St. Mark's Episcopal School is first and foremost a community dedicated to celebrating the uniqueness of each of our 475 students. Our ability to deliver an exemplary educational experience is highly dependent on our facilities and grounds being maintained, clean and prepared.

The Facilities Director protects, maintains and enhances the School and Church facilities and related assets. In a safe and efficient manner the Director oversees the maintenance, repairs, and condition of the School and Church buildings, campus grounds, and Head of School house and grounds.

St. Mark's believes strongly in a healthy work life balance, however this position is highly dependent on a flexible schedule. Some early morning and evening work is required, as well as occasional support of the maintenance staff assigned to Church and School events on weekends.

Duties :

  • Hires, supervises and schedules all building and grounds maintenance staff for the School and Church. Responsible for a department of six, including building teamwork and morale, training and development, scheduling and performance evaluation.
  • Manages prompt response to all facility work orders originating from building users, using established processes and develops new processes as appropriate. The goal is same day or 24-hour response depending on type of request with safety concerns taking priority.
  • Schedules and performs regular preventive maintenance on all building systems, including MEP, roofs, finishes, monitoring systems, and other equipment.
  • Coordinate and schedule routine, preventative maintenance and summer and holiday projects.
  • Assures that the grounds / landscape are kept in good condition at all times understanding they must positively reflect on the School and Church.
  • Selects and manages third-party maintenance contractors and manages the fulfillment of their contract obligations, including quality control of their work (e.g. landscapers, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, janitorial, etc.).
  • Oversees regular cleaning of the school, including management of contracted evening and weekend cleaning services. Responds promptly to daytime cleaning requests and supply fulfillment.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Operations / CFO, organizes, schedules and supervises all repair and construction projects, with sensitivity to School and Church seasonality and operational needs.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including work safety regulations. Oversees inspections of all building systems as needed for compliance (boiler, fire alarms, elevators, etc.).
  • Creates annual operating budget in conjunction with Director of Operations / CFO.
  • Leads cross-functional logistics team responsible for collaborating with program, advancement, Church and staff leadership, to understand special needs and maintain quality of support to the mission (e.g. food service, athletics, technology, security, fundraising). Provides facilities support for campus events (e.g. setups, refreshment support, takedowns, clean up).
  • Participates constructively in the strategic development and management of the campus (e.g. master plan, zoning compliance, utilities services, energy management).
  • Assures either the Director or appropriate team member is on call for emergencies 24 / 7.
  • Develops a program for systematic walking of the facilities to identify areas that require attention for safety, cleanliness, wear, etc.
  • Maintains library of plant reports, plans and inspections, vendor COIs, etc.

Qualifications :

  • 5+ years of related work experience is required, including a minimum of two years experience in an educational or non-profit setting. Related experience could entail construction, plant engineer, or facility management.
  • Proven staff management skills and contractor management experience, with aptitude to judge quality of performance in all major technical trades and personal experience in at least one technical trade (carpentry, mechanical, electrical, structural).
  • Communication skills (oral and written) and confidence in conveying information to all types of members of the community, including teachers, administrators, parents, and students.
  • Ability to adapt behavior to function effectively in the institution's culture, including those specific to the school's traditions.
  • Commitment to the institution's needs and readiness to respond 24 / 7 / 365 as reasonable and necessary.
  • College or trade school degree or equivalent experience required, preferably in one of the following disciplines : Industrial Management, Construction Management, Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or Architecture.
  • Spanish speaking is preferred but not required.
  • Physical Requirements and Work Environment :

  • Frequently lift equipment and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Crawl, climb ladders, twist, turn and reach in completing a variety of job duties.
  • Work outside in hot or cold conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work in a wide variety of environments as found in all areas of the school.
