Accountant I Department : Fiscal

Reports To : Fiscal Services Director

FLSA Classification : Non-Exempt

Location : In Office

Wage Range : 7 / 8 ($28.23-$31.28) Position Summary : Under general supervision of the Fiscal Services Director, the Accountant I performs varied clerical and administrative work related to keeping and processing documents involving fiscal operations and transactions. Duties can be assigned in Accounts Receivables, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Grants and Contracts, or General Accounting. This position requires multi-tasking and timely completion of tasks in coordination and collaboration with other team members. Position is located at the Intertribal Planning Center (IPC) in Shelton, WA.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Coordinate contract process and training for contract managers
Coordinate electronic document management for fiscal team
Support Program Staff
Participate in fiscal monitoring activities
Participate in annual audit and internal audit activities
Assist with special projects as assigned

The Accountant I, as an employee of South Puget Intertribal Planning Agency, is expected to collaborate, engage, and work closely with all SPIPA programs to fully support the agency’s Vision, Mission and Core Values in accordance with all agency directives.

Qualifications :

Associate’s degree plus 3 years’ experience demonstrated progressive work experience in accounting office or fiscal operations support, or

High school diploma plus 5 years’ experience in demonstrated progressive work experience in accounting office or fiscal operations support.

Experience must include one year of demonstrated computer data entry, spreadsheet and word processing software program experience (preferably MIP Accounting Software or equivalent system, and MS Office, i.e., Excel and Word).

At least one year experience working in a Native American communities preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment, including computer, calculator, copier and fax.

Ability to work efficiently and effectively and independently to meet deadlines.

High level organizational skills and attention to detail.

Excellent interpersonal skills and work well in a team environment.

Must have a proven record of accomplishment in maintaining strict confidentiality.

Written communication skills to correspond with IPC staff, Intertribal partners and vendors.

Verifiable basic math skills.

Must be bondable.

Pass a background investigation including criminal history, confirmation of work experience and education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Accounting – the ability to apply accounting policies and principles to properly record, report and maintain financial data associated with operational activities.

Communication – the ability to listen carefully and to use clear, concise oral and written skills to convey facts, present positions and interpret policies.

Customer orientation – listens to customers, builds customer confidence, increases customer satisfaction, and ensures commitments are met, sets appropriate customer expectations, and responds to customers’ needs.

Teamwork – a strong commitment to maintaining collaborative working relationships with internal partners and external customers.

Technology – the ability to use sophisticated software and tools.

Physical Abilities / Essential Functions : Bending at the waist; sitting for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard; hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read reports and data; lifting light to medium objects weighing up to 20-pound objects. Occasional travel to other SPIPA or Inter-Tribal locations.

Salary / Fringe Benefits : This position has a range of SPIPA 7 / 8 with compensation depending on qualifications (37.5 hours weekly). Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance and agency contribution to a retirement program.
