Position Overview
A privately held real estate investment firm is seeking an experienced Director of Tax to oversee the company’s tax planning, compliance, and reporting functions. This leadership role will report directly to the VP of Finance and will be responsible for managing complex partnership tax matters, investor-level reporting, and supporting the firm’s broader strategic and financial objectives.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive knowledge of real estate partnership taxation, 704(b) compliance, and have the ability to work both strategically and hands-on in a collaborative team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of tax compliance and reporting across the organization.
- Manage multi-layered 704(b) financial records, including income allocations and investor / property-level markups.
- Oversee preparation of federal and state partnership tax returns in partnership with external tax advisors.
- Coordinate all tax filings and reporting requirements, including property tax, sales tax, 1099s, tax payments, and resolution of compliance issues.
- Maintain and reconcile investor tax capital accounts, including transfers, built-in gains, and historical allocations.
- Maintain fixed asset ledgers for book, tax, AMT, and state purposes, ensuring compliance with depreciation, amortization, and capital expenditure rules.
- Manage and interpret cost segregation studies for newly acquired properties.
- Provide proactive analysis of gains / losses for asset dispositions and their impact at the investor level.
- Support transaction structuring and tax forecasting for acquisitions and dispositions.
- Partner with the internal finance team to continuously enhance tax processes, systems, and reporting.
Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation required.6–8 years of progressive experience in tax management, with a focus on real estate private funds or similar partnership structures.Expertise in maintaining 704(b) records and coordinating with external professional service providers.Strong technical knowledge of partnership returns, joint ventures, non-corporate entity taxation, and Subchapter K.Exceptional analytical and tax accounting skills with attention to detail and accuracy.Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively alongside finance and accounting leadership.Proven ability to manage complex financial operations while ensuring full compliance with tax regulations.Company Description
