Conduct project related activities including mechanical design, prototype manufacturing, and testing of medical devices, experimental apparatus, and instruments for the Translational Engineering and Design Core as a part of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Biomedical Engineering Department and IRCAD North America minimally invasive surgical training center research and development incubator.
This position requires proactive management of parallel projects, hands-on manufacturing and testing, oral and written reporting, professional communication with clients, and creative problem-solving skills. The engineer will foster positive relationships with basic science and clinical clients to provide quality service.
Education / Experience
Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related engineering discipline with two to five years of design and manufacturing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in an engineering field / industry. Additional proficiency in computer science and / or electrical engineering is helpful.
Essential Functions
Use technical engineering background to interface with core lab clients in the design, development, construction, and testing of specialized instruments, equipment, and tools to assist researchers and clinicians to perform clinical and research activities. Utilize various CAD, CAM, FEA, Segmentation, production, mechanical testing, and / or general coding software and equipment to complete design, research, and fabrication projects that address client needs.
Current Equipment and Systems : Printing (Carbon 3D - M1 printer, Bambu Labs - X1 printer, Rapid Liquid Print - Levity printer), Machine Shop (CNC Mill & Lathe, Laser welder, Laser cutter, standard shop equipment), Electronics (Multimeter, Signal generator, Soldering station), Robotics (Kuka KR300 robot, Kuka LBR med, da Vinci Standard surgical robot), Reverse Engineering (Peel 3D scanner), Software (Autodesk Fusion 360, nTop, Rhino + Grasshopper, Geomagic Wrap, Materialize Mimics, LightBurn)
Perform project management, scheduling of equipment maintenance, interface with purchasing systems to maintain lab and project supplies. Successfully manage client experience, project timeline from inception through delivery, and ensure follow-up support as needed to encourage repeat business.
