Inspector / Plans Examiner Levels I-IV (Structural) (Career Path)

The purpose of this classification is to inspect construction of new / existing buildings and review permit applications, building plans, and construction documents to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, plans, and specifications.

Note : Depending upon experience and certifications, this position may be filled at various levels :

Hourly Range at each level :

• Inspector / Plans Examiner I : $29.65 - $37.06
• Inspector / Plans Examiner II : $31.34 - $39.18
• Inspector / Plans Examiner III : $33.05 - $41.31
• Inspector / Plans Examiner IV : $38.94 - $48.67

The following duties are representative of tasks performed within this classification and are not listed in order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs field inspections of buildings during construction to ensure compliance, compares actual work to plans, inspects various building types, interprets and enforces codes, coordinates with other departments and individuals, investigates structural damage, determines pass / fail status of inspections, issues notices of violations, maintains records, reviews permit applications and documents, provides technical assistance, and operates related equipment. Also, reviews building plans, assists applicants, prepares reports, manages documentation, conducts research, communicates with various stakeholders, attends meetings, maintains knowledge of laws and materials, and participates in disaster preparedness activities. Additional functions include providing assistance to other employees and performing related duties as needed.

Communication skills are essential for effective interaction with supervisors, colleagues, contractors, and the public. Knowledge of plan review, codes, and effective problem resolution is required. Candidates must operate tools and software, and meet physical and sensory requirements suitable for field and office tasks. Environmental factors may include exposure to adverse conditions during inspections.
