School Mission : The School of Arts and Sciences (SOAS) fosters the virtues of curiosity, courage, and humility in our students, thereby preparing them for their vocations in service to others. Role : The Dean of the SOAS represents the school within the University, the community, and external partnerships. The Dean is responsible for leading the school's academic and co-curricular programs in achieving excellence in accordance with the philosophy and values of Lutheran Christian higher education. The Dean leads the faculty to establish degree and program requirements and to administer the curriculum of the school. The Dean is responsible for securing and managing fiscal resources and for recruiting, developing, and retaining faculty and staff who support and advance the school's mission and the University's strategic plan and mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include :
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily :
Administration
- Lead the development and implementation of the school's mission and strategic plan and ensure that each is congruent with the University's mission and strategic plan.
- Facilitate an environment that stimulates the intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and professional development of the school's faculty and the University's students.
- Supervise the administration of all programs within the school.
- Appoint the Assistant Dean(s) and Department Chairs annually as needed to effectively and efficiently operate the school's programs.
- Ensure that school and departmental meetings occur regularly to conduct school business.
- Empower, encourage, and supervise the faculty and staff, overseeing the evaluation of their performance annually based on the goals of the Individualized Development Plan and position descriptions.
- Ensure the accuracy, clarity, and usefulness of school information included in the academic catalog, web pages, and other print and digital material.
- Facilitate and manage relationships with external partnerships and experts, particularly for securing input on SOAS programs, internships, collaborations, donations, and service opportunities.
- Work with Admissions, Marketing, and any external partners to set, recruit for, and reach enrollment goals in innovative and effective ways.
- Work with Department Chairs, Academic Advising, and the Registrar to implement and alter course offerings, schedules, and facilities assignments.
- Work with the bookstore and SOAS faculty to ensure that books are ordered for courses each term.
- Provide oversight and support to SOAS faculty and staff for (re-)accreditation work (e.g., with NASM and ABET), including budgetary allocations and University support for any site visits and self-study reports.
- Sign official forms as needed for conducting University business.
- Prepare all regular reports about the school for the Board of Regents.
- Represent the SOAS at University events including, but not limited to, opening academic convocations, commencement ceremonies, fundraising, and recruitment events.
Curriculum
Supervise and administer all programs of study offered by the school in compliance with relevant learning outcomes, regulatory bodies, and the missions of the school and University.Monitor academic program modality, marketability, and cost effectiveness, revising or decommissioning programs as needed through proper processes.Work with the Provost and other offices on developing, approving, and implementing new academic programs.Work with the Office of Innovative Instruction and eLearning on (re)developing online courses.Coordinate with the Deans of other schools as necessary on any shared curricula or faculty.Instruction
Monitor teaching loads and make appropriate adjustments that foster academic excellence for students, build on the expertise of faculty , and maximize returns on financial investments.Maintain instructional standards and monitor faculty instructional activities, including adjuncts.Monitor student evaluation of courses and review individual results with faculty as appropriate.Hold faculty accountable to make appropriate changes in curriculum and / or instruction.Assist the Educational Effectiveness Committee with the supervision of assessing student achievement.Arrange for the resources students need to succeed academically if not already offered at the University.Faculty and Staff
Arrange for faculty and staff hiring, training, and supervision in the SOAS.Ensure all faculty participate in Vision-Mission-Vocation (VMV).Encourage faculty to develop as teachers and / or administrators, scholars, and servants in line with their callings at Concordia.Inform faculty of the University policies on and their eligibility for advancement in rank and sabbaticals.Encourage staff to cultivate their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to fulfill their particular callings.Budget
Prepare the annual budgets of the school for approval.Manage the approved operating budgets and any capital or restricted funds.Work with University Advancement to identify and secure donors for the school.Scholarship and Service
Engage in scholarship relevant to the Dean's discipline or role and in line with Full-time Faculty policy.Serve the University and communities in accord with the Full-time Faculty policy.Other duties may be assigned from time to time.
Education and / or Experience :
Master's degree is required; earned doctoral degree is preferred.Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience at the college level.Clear and compelling vision of excellence in Lutheran, Christian university education.Demonstrated skill in communication, collaboration, and administration.Support of Concordia University Irvine's doctrinal and mission statements.Full Time Faculty, Exempt
