JOB SUMMARY

The Greenhouse Technician (Weekend Shift) will support the Controlled Environments Team at the Johnston, Iowa research facility. This role is responsible for assisting with plant care activities such as seeding, pollinating, transplanting, watering, harvesting, and data collection for various crop types. The position ensures greenhouse operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all regulatory standards while maintaining a clean and organized environment. The technician will contribute to innovative agricultural research by supporting plant growth and experimental activities that advance future food solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily greenhouse plant care including seeding, pollination, transplanting, watering, harvesting, and seed management for crops such as corn, soybean, wheat, and canola.
  • Collect and prepare plant tissue samples for laboratory analysis, ensuring accurate labeling and proper sample storage.
  • Support experimental procedures and assist with data collection, entry, and record maintenance.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and compliant greenhouse environment by performing sanitation tasks, including disposal of regulated materials and waste destruction.
  • Follow all safety, ergonomic, and operational procedures to ensure a hazard-free workplace.
  • Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to support daily and project-based objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience accepted.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and willingness to learn proprietary systems.
  • Physical ability to stand or sit for extended periods, lift up to 30 lbs., and work in a warm, humid environment with pollen exposure year-round.
  • Ability to safely work around and handle common greenhouse chemicals.

    • Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, entomology, or a related plant science discipline.
  • Two or more years of experience in greenhouse or agricultural research environments.
