Lateral Police Officer

Under direction of the Police Sergeant, maintains public law and order, provides emergency aid, security, and protection of life and property for the citizens of Battle Ground by patrolling business, rural, and residential areas, responding to requests for information and assistance, assists outside agencies, investigating criminal activity, making arrests, and ensuring proper enforcement of laws and regulations.

Essential duties include patrolling assigned geographical areas, observing and reporting conditions conducive to crime, issuing citations, making arrests, directing traffic, responding to emergencies, administering first aid, conducting investigations, detaining law violators, performing community liaison activities, serving and enforcing civil process, preparing reports, attending training classes, inspecting equipment, maintaining working relations with other agencies, training new personnel, providing non-emergency assistance, performing animal control functions, and adhering to city policies and procedures.

Knowledge of city, state, and federal laws, methods of investigation, first aid, use of firearms, law enforcement principles, modern crime prevention techniques, public rights, safety regulations, and effective communication skills are required. Ability to apply crime prevention techniques, operate firearms, handle persons resisting arrest, communicate clearly, maintain composure, perform in emergencies, analyze situations, present evidence in court, and establish working relationships is required.

Education and experience : High school diploma or GED, two years of college level coursework in criminal justice or related field preferred, successful completion of an approved basic law enforcement academy, and at least 24 months of service as a commissioned law enforcement officer. Licenses, certificates, and other requirements include U.S. citizenship, valid WA state driver's license, ability to speak, read, and write English, and passing a background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and medical examination.

Physical demands include exposure to varying weather conditions, risks from violent people, weapons, chemicals, and other hazards, physical exertion, lifting over 50 lbs, rotating shift work, and call-back for emergencies.
