GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

  • A Utility Worker II works under general direction within a framework of established procedures and expected to perform a wide variety of skilled, semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation and alteration tasks.  Judgment and initiative are required in making decisions in accordance with established guidelines .
  • Examples of Duties Conducts construction, repair , and maintenance of water and wastewater lines and equipment including valves, fittings and taps.
  • Conducts new construction and installation of water and wastewater lines and equipment.
  • Conducts basic maintenance, lubrication and repair of equipment and facilities; responsible for operating various vehicles and equipment including backhoes , dump trucks, and frontend loaders.
  • Conducts the maintenance, repair and construction of plant and facilities; operates various hand and power tools and equipment to service or maintain city facilities or grounds .

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

  • Must be able to operate and care for equipment, e.g. hand and power tools .
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions in performing tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities; perform heavy physical labor; establish and mainta i n cooperative relat i onship with those contacted in the course of assigned duties :

  • estimate materials and labor needs .
  • Must be able to analyze and evaluate situations and using independent judgment and initiative in taking effective action .
  • Must be skilled i n safe work practices and the use of standard tools, materials, methods, and practices involved in sewer and water lines maintenance.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging , pushing and raising objects, and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis .   UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS : Work is performed primarily outdoors.
  • Employees in this position are often working on public roadways, exposed to traffic hazards, sometimes at night or in inclement weather.
  • Additional job site conditions include exposure to open trenches, sewage, various chemicals, and dust or pollen.
  • The employee may also be exposed to hazards such as dampness, direct sun light , machinery or its moving parts, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, or similar solutions, insect stings, liquid chemicals, and noisy work area .
  • Some sites may be in remote locations, requiring employee to walk over rough terrain.
  • The employee is frequently exposed to noxious odors, chemical fumes and liquid solvents.
  • SAFETY OF OTHERS :

  • Requires considerable responsibility for the safety and health of self and others and / or continuous enforcement of the laws and standards of public health and safety.
  • Typical Qualifications :

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS : Requires a High School diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses / training equivalent to completion of one year of college in utilities maintenance and repair or closely related training.
  • LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED Must be able to obtain a valid Class B CDL license including General Knowledge, Tanker, and Air Brakes within the first 6 months following employment.
  • Must be able to obtain the following certifications within the first 3 years following employment :

  • Water Distribution, Water Production, Water Treatment, Wastewater Collection, and Wastewater Treatment.
  • EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :

  • Requires six months' experience in water or wastewater repair and maintenance or closely related experience.   Powered by JazzHR
