Overview
Building Inspector Sr. at City of Atlanta. Protects the occupants of any building or dwelling unit and maintains the historic and physical character of the City of Atlanta through life safety and building code guidelines, performing building inspections and reviewing construction plans.
Responsibilities
- Perform advanced technical building inspection and preliminary plans examining work.
- Enforce building codes, regulations and ordinances for residential and commercial construction.
- Enforce zoning ordinances related to historic preservation and / or urban design.
- Complete inspections, write reports, create photographic documentation as required, review permits and plans, and examine construction documents.
- Plan and implement daily inspections schedule; operate and maintain city vehicle.
- Review plans for residential and commercial projects, inspect footings, site work, foundations, framing, insulation, finishes, and final inspections; issue Certificates of Occupancy.
- Perform commercial inspections of light commercial, high rise, and industrial buildings; verify electrical, plumbing, and HVAC approvals.
- Conduct fire life safety inspections on various projects, including sprinkler, egress, emergency lighting, alarms, and related systems.
- Respond to inquiries from architects, contractors, City personnel and the public; interpret and explain building codes and procedures; advise on compliant methods.
- May assist with scheduling appointments and reviewing / approving plans in compliance with applicable codes.

Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks; applies organizational policies and may interpret policies to recommend exceptions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of advanced building inspection principles, structural design, construction methods, safety standards, and applicable laws and regulations; historic preservation and / or urban design regulations.Skill in organizing inspections and reports, detecting code violations, and analyzing plans for code compliance.Ability to read and interpret complex building plans, codes, and specifications; communicate clearly in writing and verbally; work independently and manage priorities; operate office equipment safely.Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED. 2 years of specialized / technical training in building inspections and the Uniform Building Code and a minimum of three years of experience as a building inspector (or an equivalent combination of experience and training), including at least one year enforcing historic preservation and / or urban design related ordinances.
Preferred Education & Experience
Associate's degree in construction, engineering or related field or a degree in architecture, architectural engineering, or historic preservation, and three to five years of construction and / or building inspection experience including one year in residential / commercial buildings and enforcing historic preservation and / or urban design ordinances.
Licensures and Certifications
Must have licensure / certifications appropriate to the position; Required : ICC Building Inspector Certification.
