Overview

Professor – Adult Orthopedic Spine MD – AMC at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is seeking a board-certified / board-eligible Orthopedic Surgeon with a sub-specialty in Adult Spine Surgery and interest in complex spine deformity, tumor and infection. Based at the Anschutz Medical Campus. All candidates must have completed a 5-year residency and a one-year fellowship, have an interest in developing a clinical practice, research endeavors, and participate in our resident / fellow education program. The primary responsibility will be as an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon with clinical, teaching, and research expectations. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with credentials, and will be closely linked with income generated. The position offers two tracks : a clinical track and a research track. The clinical track does not have a research requirement but is not tenure eligible. All other rights and privileges are the same in both tracks.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities – Clinical (70%)

  • Obtain detailed history and perform physical examinations; assess and treat acute / chronic medical problems; provide direct patient care; write prescriptions for medications, PT, OT, imaging studies, and DME as needed; complete FMLA and other forms as needed.
  • Provide pre-op, intra-op and post-op care; write appropriate orders, including those for narcotics and other scheduled drugs.
  • Duties may include inpatient care, consultation and coverage in the emergency room.
  • Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
  • Coordinate the activities of patient care and support staff within the clinic; work with the team to ensure smooth operation of the clinic.
  • Write progress notes on patients' office and hospital charts in a timely fashion indicating patient status and treatment procedures performed; maintain other records as required.
  • Participate in on-call coverage for orthopedic surgery as part of the orthopedic group practice; jointly cover on-call days as needed, provide emergent treatment and admit / temporize patients as medically appropriate.
  • Provide health education to patients and families; may train and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, mid-level students and other health professional students engaged in specific clinical activities.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
  • Participate (attend, give talks, help organize) in educational programs including weekly academic conferences, journal clubs, etc.
  • Assist in community outreach events including giving educational talks, organizing, planning, and attending.
  • Develop written educational materials and treatment protocols for specific conditions and post-operative care.
  • Give PowerPoint and poster presentations for educational purposes at institutional, local and national meetings.
  • Perform clinical and / or basic science research related to spine specific conditions and prepare manuscripts for publication in conjunction with the orthopedic spine research group.
  • Responsibilities – Administrative Leadership (30%)

  • Analyze healthcare utilization, cost trends, and outcomes data to inform budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.
  • Partner with finance and operations teams to evaluate the economic impact of clinical programs, service lines, and population health initiatives.
  • Serve as a liaison between clinical sections and financial leadership to ensure alignment of clinical goals with fiscal responsibility.
  • Contribute to the development of dashboards, KPIs, and reporting tools that track financial and clinical performance.
  • Participate in contract negotiations and payer strategy discussions, offering clinical perspectives on reimbursement models and incentives.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Board certified and / or board eligible Orthopedic Spine Surgeon
  • Completion of a five-year residency and a one-year fellowship
  • Minimum of 10 years of clinical experience; 5 of which as a practicing Orthopedic Spine surgeon
  • Demonstrated experience in healthcare finance and economics
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest in developing a clinical practice and working together as an orthopedic group in a hybrid academic-private practice setting.
  • Participate in our resident / fellowship education program.

    Anticipated Pay Range

    The hiring range for this position is $600,000 - $750,000. This range reflects the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless non-exempt. Total compensation includes leave, health plans and retirement contributions.
