Overview
School Law Attorney : Employment Litigation Defense Partner. We are seeking a School Employment Law Partner with ten (10+) years of school district defense experience at a senior or partnership level to represent its Los Angeles office. The successful candidate need not reside in Los Angeles and may work remotely. The attorney hired should have civil trial experience as either a first or second chair trial defense lawyer and must have been eighty percent (80%) focused on school district employment litigation defense work for the last five (5) years.
The billable hours expectation for the position is 150 hrs. / month. The base salary is $230,000-$300,000, depending on experience, with potential for additional earnings through a quarterly bonus plan. Details will be discussed with qualified candidates.
Responsibilities
- Defend school districts against employment-related lawsuits, including wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation suits involving teachers, staff, and administrators.
- Handle disputes arising from complaints filed with agencies like the EEOC, state education departments, and labor boards.
- Oversee the discovery process, engage in motion practice, and conduct settlement negotiations with a focus on public sector employment regulations and education law.
Strategic Counsel & Legal Guidance for School District Leadership
Advise school boards, superintendents, and HR departments on navigating complex employment laws such as Title IX, ADA, FMLA, and state-specific education regulations.Develop proactive legal strategies to mitigate risk in labor disputes, employee discipline, hiring practices, and contract negotiations.Provide counsel on addressing union relations, teacher tenure, and collective bargaining agreements to prevent litigation and ensure compliance.Policy Development & Compliance for Educational Institutions
Review and draft school district employment policies on matters such as employee conduct, tenure, discipline, and termination, ensuring alignment with employment and education laws.Provide advice on drafting teacher and staff contracts, ensuring compliance with public education laws, union agreements, and collective bargaining terms.Ensure practices of the firm's school district clients comply with federal and state regulations affecting public school employment, including Title IX, ADA, and other education-specific statutes.Training & Development for School District HR and Administrators
Provide tailored training to school district leadership, HR personnel, and administrators on legal compliance and best practices in handling employee relations to mitigate litigation risk.Conduct workshops on issues such as anti-discrimination, sexual harassment prevention, and teacher tenure and union rules, ensuring adherence to legal and ethical standards.Qualifications
