TITLE : Music Teacher

LOCATION : Silver City

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students. KCKPS employs more than 4,000 staff, including over 1,800 teachers. The district offers Head Start / preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies / high schools. The student population includes multiple languages and diverse communities.

JOB GOAL : To facilitate student comprehension and application of concepts, skills and behaviors that contribute to the development of mature, able and responsible members of society; and to ensure continuous improvement in state and national performance levels to prepare students for college and careers in a global society.

Essential Functions

• Ability to implement 21st Century Skills into the curriculum.
• Ability to work a full duty day in the location or locations assigned.
• Assess student abilities related to desired educational goals, objectives, student outcomes and Head Start Performance Standards to maximize student achievement.
• Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction / learning strategies and activities compatible with the physical facility and student needs.
• Manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in behavior management in other parts of the site.
• Continuously communicate instructional expectations and student progress to students and parents (written or verbal).
• Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutions and reporting purposes.
• Collaborate with other program personnel in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
• Participate in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings, in-service and staff development as required.
• Assist in documenting student progress by maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
• Ensure the classroom and instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and conducive to learning.
• Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
• Participate as a regular teacher in IEP meetings for IDEA students.
• Maintain knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of the instructional specialty.
• Understand student growth and development applicable to the assigned grade level and related early childhood program of studies.
• Continually study and learn current research and theory.
• Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and student needs and abilities.
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers; serve as a family advocate as needed and participate in home visits.
• Display strong oral and written communication skills and excellent human relations.
• Demonstrate physical and emotional ability to perform duties in a fast-paced environment and move around the room to monitor student work and behavior.
• Take attendance and maintain attendance records according to Board policy.
• Know and follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
• Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor and appearance.
• Other duties as assigned.

Communication / Organization

Maintains communication with school personnel and parents / guardians to support educational needs. Utilizes technology effectively in duties.

Reasoning, Language, and Other Skills

REASONING ABILITY : Solve practical problems and interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

LANGUAGE SKILLS : Read, interpret and analyze professional materials; write reports, curriculum materials, and correspondence. Present information effectively to administrators, staff, parents, students and the public.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Regularly sit, walk, stand and communicate; vision requirements include close and distance vision and depth perception. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
