Individuals selected must be able to respond to emergency callout within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions, to be considered for this position.

Duties include but are not limited to :

• Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort involving exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
• Operate plows during winter operations and obtain the equipment certifications listed above.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 :

Must be 18 years old, pass physical / medical examination and drug test

Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 :

Must be 18 years old, pass physical / medical examination

Highway Maintenance Worker 1 :

Satisfactory completion of the Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience in the operation of highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles in excess of 26,000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating with air brakes and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with DOT-specified endorsements, and two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications, in addition to the following three specific certifications : heavy dump truck, one person plowing with single or double wing, and front-end loader.

Within the first two weeks of employment, applicant must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification, or their employment will be terminated.

NOTE : All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical / medical examination

The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1 (SG 6) is $47,694.00. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $38,694.00 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000.00, specific to this title and location.

The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 (SG 7) is $49,833.00. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $40,833.00 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000.00, specific to this title and location.

The starting salary for the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (SG 8) is $52,136.00. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $43,136.00 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000.00 specific to this title and location.
