The Superintendent is responsible for providing a safe, customer oriented, cost-effective response to our customers’ industrial switching needs. The Superintendent coordinates the safety initiatives, workflow processes and procedures, people management, and daily operational needs on the sites.
General Responsibilities
Safety
Perform Safety Management System activities such as Employee Efficiency Testing, Loss Prevention Observations, Incident ReportingImplement changes as a result of site and employee performance audits in a timely manner and follow-up to ensure effectiveness of changesRespond to incidents, lead and implement recommendations as a result of incidentsWorks with employees on a daily basis to ensure that all Cando’s safety policies are strictly adhered to with a focus on operational practices, identifying potential hurdles, targeting inconsistencies and aligning the services of the operations to meet customer needsDesign / implement work systems and procedures for operational effectivenessBe a leader in safe work practices; responsible for the mentoring of employees in all aspects of safe railway operationsManagement, Administration & Planning
Ensure service aligns with vision, mission, goals and the needs of the customerImplement plans for managing growth and delivering on goals and objectivesManage contractors on site and ensure they have the understanding, skills, training, and resources to achieve objectivesLead activities related to division initiatives; deliver initiatives around company programs and policiesIdentify new business leads; implement start up plans for new businessManage invoicing and purchasing for sites and ensure accurate tracking of key consumablesMonitor locomotive and equipment procurement and maintenance programsLeadership & Employee Development
Work with site supervisors to improve operational practices, identify hurdles, target inconsistencies and align servicesPromotes harmonious employee relations while guiding and coaching supervisors; build and maintain healthy customer relationships at site levelPrepares and implements employee development plans; ensures all employees have adequate training to contribute fully to the projectManage site staffing including participating in interviews, onboarding new employees, managing schedules and absenteeism, performing payroll activities, coordinating training, and conducting performance evaluationsWork with local Class 1 providers to resolve day to day issuesQualifications

Experience managing railway personnel in a customer focused environmentExperience in managing for efficiency and effectiveness to bring about change in a fast-paced environmentMinimum two (2) years in a leadership position preferable in the rail switching and / or industrial environmentOne (1) year experience working with Safety Management Systems in an industrial environmentOne (1) year experience developing and managing capital and operating budgetsDetails Specific to Business Unit
The Superintendent is responsible for the handling and tracking of the customer’s products and materials ensuring optimal levels are maintained and preventing shortages or overstock while maintaining efficient operations. The ideal candidate has a background in inventory control and management with experience shipping from truck and rail. Site specific responsibilities include :
Inventory Management – Tracking and maintaining inventory records, monitoring stock levels, ordering new supplies, coordinating with suppliers and other departments, analyzing data to improve processes, and managing warehouse teams; monitor and control inventory levels to ensure sufficient stock for sales, production, and deliveries, while minimizing costsSupply Management - Analyze demand and sales data to anticipate future inventory needs; initiate orders for new stock and supplies to meet demand; manage relationships with suppliers and negotiate costs to ensure timely and cost-effective procurementSite Management - Oversee the storage, organization, and accessibility of inventory within site; ensure compliance with safety regulations and efficient movement of goods through the supply chainNote : This description is not intended to limit the assignment of work or be construed as a complete list of the many duties to be performed by the incumbent.
