Director Of Nursing

Provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for nursing practice, professional development, and education across the WVU Health System. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating system-wide programs that advance clinical excellence, shared governance, evidence-based practice, and leadership development.

Serving as a key advisor to nursing and executive leadership, the Director supports innovation in care delivery, fosters interprofessional collaboration, and ensures alignment with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and organizational goals. The role balances high-level strategic planning with hands-on support, providing expert consultation, coaching, and oversight to local hospital leaders, educators, and clinical teams.

Minimum Qualifications :

Education, Certification, and / or Licensure : 1. Master's degree in nursing or related field.
2. Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided OR current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
3. Must possess and maintain one (1) of the following nursing professional certifications : Nurse Executive Certification (NE-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC); Nurse Executive, Advanced Certification (NEA-BC) from ANCC, Nursing Professional Development Certification (NPD-BC) from ANCC, or Certified in Executive Nursing Practice Certification (CENP) from American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL).
Experience : 1. Five (5) years of clinical nursing experience.
2. Two (2) years of experience with shared governance and nursing program-related accreditation standards.

Preferred Qualifications :

Education, Certification, and / or Licensure : 1. Doctoral Degree in Nursing (DNP or PhD) or Related field (EdD).

Experience : 1. Five (5) years of nursing and / or operational leadership experience with responsibility for directly supervising others. Experience across multiple hospital settings or in an integrated healthcare system. 2. Experience with project and change management in a complex healthcare environment.

3. Demonstrated dissemination of professional work through scholarly activities such as publishing in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at national professional conferences, contributing to evidence-based practice initiatives, or authoring educational or clinical practice materials.

Strategic Leadership and Innovative Program Development :

1. Partners with system nursing leadership and hospital Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs), to support innovation in nursing practice, ensuring alignment with clinical quality, patient experience, and value-based care goals.

2. Collaborates with Directors of Nursing Education and CNOs to harmonize system nursing practice, competence, and development in alignment with organizational goals and nursing strategic plans, ensuring governance by professional nurses and prioritizing patient safety and care quality.

3. Provides strategic leadership in organizational and nursing planning, incorporating consumer input and nurse participation in decision-making.

4. Collaborates with senior leadership to shape organizational strategies and drive system-wide improvements.

5. Leads the development of infrastructure to support system-wide strategic planning and implementation of nursing professional practice models.

6. Serves as a consultant across departments and external organizations on matters related to nursing practice, research, policy, recruitment, education, and quality of care.

System Support for Local Hospitals :

1. Serves as a subject matter expert and strategic partner, providing consultation and on-site support for nursing professional practice, maintaining visibility and building strong relationships across facilities.

2. Collaborates with CNOs, nursing leaders, and educators to ensure consistent and effective education, orientation, and professional development across the system while honoring local culture.

3. Partners with system and hospital leaders to promote clinical transformation, promoting evidence-based nursing practice, reducing variability, and overseeing nurse-sensitive outcome measures (e.g., NDNQI).

Project Management and Analytics :

1. Leads and contributes to system-wide projects in collaboration with CNOs, clinical operations, education, human resources, finance, and quality teams on a routine basis to measure, assess and improve nurse-sensitive and organizational outcomes.

2. Collects and analyzes performance data to evaluate the impact of educational programs and identifies improvement opportunities, including engagement in fiscal planning to ensure timely, cost-effective access to educational resources.

3. Provides administrative leadership and support for evidence-based practice (EBP), shared governance, transition to practice and nurse residency programs, and Magnet / Pathway to Excellence initiatives through consultation and strategic oversight.

Education Operations :

1. Chairs the System Education Committee, providing strategic direction for nursing education across the enterprise.

2. Aligns educational programming with organizational goals and the nursing strategic plan.

3. Oversees centralized development of tools and platforms to support onboarding, nurse residency, competency verification, and clinical education, ensuring regulatory compliance in nursing education operations and ensuring systems meet accrediting body expectations.

4. Serves as a liaison to academic partners to facilitate positive student nurse experiences in alignment with organizational and regional requirements.

Leadership Development and Engagement :

1. Designs and collaborates system-wide programs to support professional development, including academic advancement frameworks and national certification of nurses; Oversees the WVU Medicine Clinical Advancement of Professional Excellence (CAPE) Program at the system level and serves as a member of the System Nursing Leadership Council.

2. Promotes a culture of clinical excellence, competence, education, professional growth, interprofessional collaboration, and nurse engagement to enhance workplace safety and employee engagement.

3. Facilitates shared decision-making by engaging local nursing leadership in the planning and execution of system initiatives.

4. Contributes to the advancement of nursing professional practice through scholarship, thought leadership, and dissemination of knowledge.

5. Fosters a culture of mentorship and leadership development to empower nurses to reach their full potential.

6. Champions nurse well-being and safety as foundational elements of professional practice.
