Description :
The unit is an Emergency Department that does not have trauma level designation.
The unit does not serve as a STEMI or Stroke center.
There are 11 beds and trauma bays.
A Fast Track is not available.
There is one triage room that is not staffed separately and is used only when patient rooms are full.
Emergency RNs manage holds, which are intermixed within the ER.
There are two safe behavioral health rooms; however, they are not separate from other ER rooms.
Security is housed in the ER but is not available 24 / 7.
The average number of patients treated in the ER per day is approximately 40.
Nurse-to-patient ratios are typically 1 : 3 or 1 : 4.
Required certifications include ACLS, BLS, PALS, and SANE (as of January 2023).
Common diagnoses seen in the ER include cardiac, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues.
Candidates must have experience with common drips.
There is 24 / 7 physician coverage, and NPs provide coverage for 12 hours.
The charge nurse takes a patient load, while a house supervisor is available after 3 PM daily.
Emergency Techs provide 24 / 7 coverage, with additional sitters utilized as needed.
Respiratory therapy is available 24 / 7 to perform ABGs, intubation, EKGs, and breathing treatments.
The equipment used includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and Vapotherm.
RNs are expected to troubleshoot with the equipment but are not responsible for operating it.
Telemetry is managed using Nihon Koden monitors, and RNs are responsible for reading strips with training provided to ER Techs and the ER secretary.
Portable x-ray equipment is available, with radiology managing the transport unless there is a STAT stroke head CT, where ER staff will transport and monitor.
Nurses attempt IV sticks and collaborate with phlebotomy for lab draws, utilizing Steri-path for blood culture draws.
Shifts are scheduled for 12 hours with a requirement of every other weekend and holiday.
There is no call or standby requirement, but open call shifts may be available to pick up.
Floating to other tasks may occur occasionally.
The dress code includes grey tops and black pants.
Unit-specific orientation varies based on experience.
The charting system used is Cerner Corporation - Millennium.
