Overview
Sr. Substation Protection & Control Engineer role with WSP in the U.S. is located in or near Binghamton, NY, Horseheads, NY, with consideration for Buffalo, NY; Boston, MA; New York, NY; Portland, ME; and Augusta, ME. The candidate will join our East Energy team and work on projects with our Energy Team to meet client objectives and address challenges. Your Impact
- Work under mentorship and guidance of the Supervising Engineer.
- Lead overall protection design for all capital projects and define relay protection functionality / scheme in accordance with Client standards.
- Perform detailed review of existing protection schemes to incorporate into new design (anti-islanding, generator intertie settings, SPS schemes, etc.).
- Review contractor provided relay settings, logic diagrams (including Goose messaging diagrams), and operational descriptions for all capital projects.
- Review / perform area relay coordination and determine required level of coordination based on fault duty and project changes.
- Review contractor provided relay settings for temporary builds and construction sequence steps including mobile settings.
- Review / input Owner's Aspen model changes as required for individual capital projects.
- Provide design support during implementation, testing and commissioning.
- Provide feedback to Owner on existing standards and help refine design practices.
- Ensure as-built documentation is filed appropriately in the plant filing location at Owner.
- Lead overall automation and integration design for all capital projects; review / design SCADA point indexes and HMI screens / settings; design protection settings and IED Data Maps.
- Review / create substation level operational descriptions (HMI operation, relay front panel operation, etc.).
- Review automated maintenance data gathering (Digital Substation Data) point lists.
- Track licenses / firewalls and key automation / delivery deliverables required for project implementation.
- Provide design support during implementation / testing and commissioning of the above items.
- Perform constructability review and ensure adequate automation and integration coverage for each outage step (SCADA, etc.).
- Apply electrical engineering principles to perform technical computations and comparisons to regulations.
- Demonstrate self-leadership, attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment.
- Work independently and guide junior team or project members with QA / QC adherence.
- Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to reach effective, economical solutions from testing and data analysis.
- Assertively direct others in the field (subcontractors and others) to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Perform additional responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.5+ years of relevant post-education experience in electrical engineering, power systems protection and control.EIT Certification.IEC 61850 / GOOSE experience required.Experience in consulting firms is a plus.Proficient with engineering design tools and software.Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities.Ability to work independently and in a team; maintain project ownership.Efficient communication with team members not located in the same office (MS Teams, email, telephone).Proven safety performance and ability to adhere to WSP's health, safety and harassment policies.Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek; occasional travel may be required.Subject to client-manded drug / alcohol testing policy; random tests may apply.Position contingent upon client approval of candidates.Preferred Qualifications
Master's Degree in Engineering.Compensation & Benefits

Compensation range : $83,200 - $145,530 (location dependent). WSP USA reserves the right to adjust pay based on factors including education, experience, and geographic location.
