Description of Work Unit
The Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) is Colorado's primary biological conservation information center housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. CNHP maintains the only centralized conservation database in Colorado for plants, animals, and natural communities and works with federal, state, local agencies, consultants, environmental groups, landowners, and the public. CNHP conducts inventory, research, and monitoring across Colorado and engages in over 50 conservation projects per year.
Position Summary : CNHP has position opportunities for Conservation Research Associates (Special and Temporary Administrative Professional assignments) in Zoology, Botany, Vegetation Ecology, GIS, and Environmental Compliance support. Roles may be full-time in-person or part-time / in-person with remote options. Positions are contingent on funding and may require travel and field work in remote settings, including 4–8 day field hitches.
Responsibilities (illustrative by team)
Zoology : Plan and logistics, land access, ArcGIS field mapping, travel for fieldwork, data quality control and entry, analysis, and report writing. May include staff hiring / training, proposals support, and documentation. Proficiency in scientific writing, Microsoft Office, statistics, and ArcGIS required.
Botany and Vegetation Ecology Teams : Planning, land access, ArcGIS Field Map and Survey123 work, field data collection (biodiversity, vegetation, seeds / herbarium, weed mapping), crew leadership, field logistics, post-season data processing, and reporting. Requires navigation in rugged terrain and adherence to NatureServe methodologies. May involve supervising staff and coordinating sponsor meetings.
GIS : Technical support on multiple projects, data entry in CNHP's Biotics Data System, creating GIS products (story maps), and duties such as cartography, spatial data development, spatial analysis, scripting (Python / SQL / ETL), and use of ArcGIS tools.
Environmental Compliance Support : Vegetation and Natural Resources, aquatic, wetlands, entomology, and related CNHP conservation activities.
