ABOUT THE POSITION :
The Referral Specialist works in collaboration with medical providers and the healthcare team to coordinate and process referrals for specialty care. This role ensures patients are connected to appropriate specialists, assists patients in navigating insurance requirements, and supports continuity of care through follow-up and documentation. The Referral Specialist also acts as a patient advocate by helping to remove barriers to care and improve service delivery.

Process specialist referrals requested by medical providers in a timely and accurate manner.Verify insurance requirements and request service authorization (for specialist visits, imaging, and procedures) when needed.Ensure medical records from specialist visits are received and uploaded into the patient’s chart.Assist patients in identifying specialists who accept their insurance and meet their care needs.Maintain accurate documentation of referrals, authorizations, and follow-up in the EMR system.Track and provide monthly referral reports to the Medical Director and Executive Director.Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and external specialists’ offices.Support efficient workflow and organization within the referral process.Complete all administrative tasks and reporting requirements as per program standards.Performs other duties as assigned to support program needsHOW YOU QUALIFY FOR THE ROLE :
High School diploma or equivalent is required.Medical Assistant education or certification is preferred, as well as prior experience in a medical office setting.Candidates should have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical records, procedures, and insurance / authorization requirements.Strong organizational and communication skills are essential to effectively interact with providers, patients, and external offices.Proficiency in electronic medical record systems, data entry, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment are also required.WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Referral Specialist works in a collaborative, fast-paced healthcare environment supporting primary care services. The role requires frequent interaction with staff, providers, and patients and involves occasional travel between clinic sites. The position operates in a dynamic healthcare setting where priorities may shift, requiring adaptability, teamwork, and effective problem-solving. This position is an in-office position.
