Overview
Join our team as a Construction Project Engineer supporting transportation infrastructure projects. You'll oversee field activities, ensure quality standards, and serve as a trusted advisor to clients by solving construction challenges and guiding projects to successful completion. Ideal candidates bring a civil engineering background, construction observation experience, and strong problem-solving skills.
Responsibilities
- Understands and interprets local, state, and / or federal Standard Specifications and Procedures. Answers questions from the contractor and exercises independent judgment when applying standards or modifying construction plans to field conditions. Mediates disputes arising from standards interpretation or enforcement.
- Uses subject matter expertise to identify root causes of construction defects from design flaws, material installation, or site conditions. Proactively advises client and contractor on recommended actions to resolve concerns.
- Advises clients and stakeholders on new approaches to address problems, materials, and methods to improve outcomes, speed up schedules, mitigate risk, improve safety, or save costs.
- Acts as a business partner by building ongoing client relationships. Leads meetings with clients and contractors to resolve issues related to schedule, plan changes, and additional costs. Mediates project matters with the contractor on behalf of the client.
- Provides financial stewardship by interpreting quality control checks, assisting in pay estimates, quantifying pay items, and resolving accounting disputes with contractors on behalf of the client. May withhold payment for non-conforming work.
- Observes and documents contractor work to ensure conformance with plans, specifications, and applicable regulatory requirements. Performs quality assurance checks and advises on corrective actions when non-compliance is detected.
- Analyzes and resolves work problems and client, contractor, or public concerns. Develops a Lessons Learned summary to educate designers about errors, omissions, or constructability issues.
- Applies engineering knowledge of structures or materials and the behavior of soils, water, and foundations to provide guidance on QA methods, procedures, standards, and training related to site design and construction.
- Plans, coordinates, and supervises subconsultants to enforce project scope.
- Coordinates and attends progress meetings with the client, HR Green staff, and other key stakeholders.
- Makes quick, independent decisions in complex situations as they arise.
- Performs material yield checks, tolerances, and pay item quantity measurements for payment. Performs basic construction layout and utilizes standard office software (Word, Excel, etc.).
- Maintains neat and accurate project documentation for small projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education / Experience
Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Engineering required; a degree in Civil Engineering preferred.Up to 5 years of related construction observation experience with moderately complex plans.Familiarity with documentation requirements and inspection procedures.Excellent time management, communication, and technical skills.Training on equipment used in engineering-related tests and analysis.Knowledge of MS Office suite.Physical Demands / Work Environment
Work may occur in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain) for extended periods. Standing for 8 to 12 hours per day, and work on uneven terrain. Ability to lift and move a minimum of 30 lbs. May require kneeling, crouching, bending, and computer use. Reasonable accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.

Compensation Range : $59,000 - $85,000
The final compensation is determined by factors including education, qualifications, skills, experience, and location. Total compensation may include base pay and eligibility to participate in incentive programs after a qualifying period.
