Purpose
The Pilot in Command functions as a member of the critical‑care transport team. The Pilot in Command is responsible for, and is the final authority over, the safe operation of the assigned aircraft on all flights released and operated by the STAT MedEvac system. The Pilot in Command is expected to exercise independent judgment to provide the safest and most efficient air transportation of CEM patients in a highly challenging and rapidly changing operational environment. The Pilot in Command fulfills training and safety requirements as established by the STAT MedEvac Director of Operations, Chief Pilot, Director of Safety, and Director of Training, and performs other duties as assigned. The Pilot supports and upholds the mission, goals, and objectives of the STAT MedEvac system at all times.
Responsibilities
Report to duty well rested and fit; adhere to the drug and alcohol policy, including FAA requirements regarding medications; meet workload start times to receive a release number by shift start; coordinate with flight followers for currency, duty time, aircraft, and weather status; debrief as necessary.Complete official documentation—payroll, expense reports, training forms—and post‑flight record‑keeping accurately and timely; file hazard or incident reports; stay familiar with required software / hardware.Conduct all flights with safety as priority : transmit necessary flight manifests; obtain flight releases; follow CEM policies and procedures (GOM, Op Specs, checklists); operate without regulatory violations; exercise PIC emergency authority; maintain instrument proficiency; conduct shift‑change briefs with crews; keep training records current.Ensure aircraft air‑worthiness : maintain maintenance logs, perform pre‑flight and post‑flight inspections, manage fuel / O₂, keep aircraft clean and properly secured; document maintenance events; mentor new pilots; protect patient privacy; maintain professional appearance and positive customer rapport.Flight‑time requirements : 2,000 total flight hours; 1,500 helicopter flight hours; 1,000 PIC helicopter flight hours; 200 night flight hours (≥ 100 unaided); 100 instrument hours; 500 turbine hours.Additional consideration granted to pilots with fewer than 2,000 total hours based on superior prior experience and qualifications.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
Commercial rotor‑craft helicopter certificate with instrument rating (required).Current second‑class medical license (required).Valid and current state driver’s license (required).Experience in a helicopter EMS transport system preferred.Four‑year degree with aviation applications preferred (optional).Other licenses : Airline Transport Pilot or Commercial Pilot License (CPL).UPMC is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran.
