Manager of R&D, New Product Development – Job Description

Location : Oceanside, CA (On-site)

Reports To : Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO)

CitroTech by MFB is redefining wildfire prevention and wood treatment through clean, science-based innovation. Our EPA Safer Choice–certified and UL Greenguard Gold listed fire inhibitor technology offers a non-toxic, biodegradable alternative to traditional fire retardants—protecting homes, communities, and infrastructure without harming people, pets, or the environment.

We’re building the next generation of wildfire defense systems, combining chemistry, engineering, and sustainability to make fire protection proactive, not reactive. In addition, we are helping to advance formulations of CitroTech for the wood products and treated lumber industry to bring fire retarding capabilities.

The Role

As CitroTech continues to scale, we’re looking for a Manager of R&D and New Product Development to bring structure and scientific rigor to product development and quality control efforts. You’ll work directly with the founder(CTO), our board Chairman and our Chief Operating Officer (COO), as well as external lab partners to codify product formulations, manage testing and certification programs, and ensure every process meets the highest quality and regulatory standards.

This is a hands-on role that bridges product innovation, compliance, and knowledge capture. You’ll play a key role in translating the chemistry and field experience that built CitroTech into scalable, repeatable systems that power our growth. You will test new formulations and help to determine advancements of the existing product and new product capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

R&D and New Product Development

Set up lab testing and new product development area within Oceanside facility
Lead in-house formulation and performance testing for existing and new CitroTech products.
Design and run experiments to evaluate product stability, coverage, and field application.
Coordinate with third-party labs (Intertek, UL, Dr. J Engineering, etc.) for ASTM, EPA, and UL testing and certification.
Support structured product improvement and innovation initiatives under the CTO’s guidance.

Knowledge Capture and Documentation

Partner with the founder as well as chairman of the board to document all formulations, preparation methods, and product application processes.

Develop standardized SOPs, QC logs, and testing protocols.

Maintain a centralized, version-controlled knowledge base for all R&D and compliance documentation.

Translate technical data into accessible materials for internal teams and compliance partners.

Quality and Compliance

Implement and manage quality control processes for raw materials, mixes, and finished products.

Oversee SDS creation and updates in coordination with compliance partners

Manage and track all certifications, test reports, and audit documentation.

Reporting and Continuous Improvement

Produce monthly R&D and compliance summaries highlighting tests completed, certifications in progress, and key findings.

Communicate risks, trends, and improvement opportunities to leadership.

Identify opportunities to optimize formulations, reduce costs, or improve product consistency.

Contribute to the long-term R&D and compliance roadmap

Qualifications

A self-starter that is able to function well under minimal guidance at times

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.

4–8 years of experience in R&D, product formulation, or quality / compliance within chemical, coatings, or specialty manufacturing sectors.

Familiar with SDS, EPA, ASTM, UL, and similar certification or documentation frameworks.

Strong technical writing and organizational skills with attention to detail.

Hands-on and proactive, comfortable working in lab and warehouse environments.

Ability to collaborate effectively across technical and operational teams.
