Information Systems Specialist role at Columbus County.
General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible technical work installing, maintaining, and supporting computer systems and programs in assigned County departments and technologies.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
This position involves troubleshooting and resolving PC hardware and software issues, along with County-wide technology support responsibilities. Work includes :
- Installing, maintaining, and supporting computers, servers, firewalls, remote connections, inter-site connectivity, and networks.
- Assisting users with connectivity, data, and troubleshooting issues.
- Maintaining phone and voice systems, performing data backups, and installing / configuring PCs and peripherals.
- Performing network maintenance and upgrades.
- Setting up audio-visual equipment.
- Managing network, phone, and email accounts.
- Recommending equipment and software solutions.
- Performing database analysis and reporting.
Work requires strong technical knowledge of hardware, software, networking, and programming applications. Duties are performed under limited supervision and reviewed via conferences, observation, and project results.
Essential Duties and Tasks
Support specialized information technology and software; debug issues, research errors, and determine hardware / software causes.Troubleshoot hardware, software, and peripheral problems; respond to service requests; conduct maintenance and upgrades.Plan and execute system and technology modifications to meet departmental needs.Install, support, and maintain firewalls for site-to-site VPN security and performance.Configure, maintain, and upgrade servers; set up network accounts.Perform regular data backups and ensure retention compliance.Work with vendors to research, recommend, and troubleshoot products.Research and design systems for specialized needs.Test and program election equipment; compile and report election data.Train users on system applications.Specialization : Emergency Services Radio Programming
Program, configure, maintain, and support public safety radios for police, fire, EMS, and other agencies.Develop and maintain standardized code plugs for multi-agency use.Load / update firmware, encryption keys, and settings on radios.Maintain an inventory of all radio equipment and software.Coordinate with local, state, and federal agencies for joint communication planning.Additional Duties
On-call for emergency response to equipment and software issues.Perform related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of PC and system hardware / software, LAN / WAN technologies, and related devices.Knowledge of operating systems, server technology, and security systems.Understanding of hardware / software integration and server operations.Ability to follow written / oral instructions and handle confidential information.Skill in diagnosing and resolving technical problems.Strong communication skills for explaining technical issues to non-technical users.Ability to work effectively with staff, supervisors, and external contacts.Physical Requirements
Ability to perform functions such as stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting (up to 50 lbs occasionally, 20 lbs frequently), fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.Visual acuity for data preparation, inspections, repairs, installations, and extensive reading.Desirable Education and Experience
Associates or Bachelors degree in information systems, network administration, computer science, or related field.Several years of experience in computer operations and technical support.Equivalent combinations of education and experience considered.Certain positions may require specialized training or certifications.Special Requirement
