Road Maintenance Worker
Under direction, operates heavy power-driven equipment as a major work assignment in responsible road or drainage construction and maintenance work; leads small crews of Public Works Maintenance Workers as assigned and / or to manage projects relating to road or drainage construction and maintenance work.
The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill any future opening(s), including Part-Time and Extra Help, in this class for up to six months.
Supervises and directs assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, and directing work.
Plans and organizes a safe work environment for the public and for the crew; prepares areas for safe and efficient work.
Operates assorted machinery including trucks and trailers, front-end loaders, backhoe, rollers, crack sealer, paint truck, and others in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads, County drainage facilities, culverts, and other infrastructure.
Transports materials and equipment to job site.
Clears right-of-ways of debris, trees, and trash.
Installs, maintains, and repairs traffic control devices such as road markings and signs; assists in bridge maintenance.
Performs variety of concrete work including from preparation and finished work for gutters, sidewalks, drain inlets, and others.
Clears slides and brush, gutters, curbs, culverts, catch basins, and other drainage structures.
Prepares various oil, dirt, sand, and gravel mixes for road work; spreads surfacing materials and finishes road surface and shoulders.
Performs minor routine maintenance and field adjustments on equipment such as checking oil and fluid levels, checking tire pressure, and checking belts.
Assists in removal and clean up of hazardous spills and waste; maintains safe chemical levels on public water systems.
Redirects and controls traffic around work site to ensure safety for the public and for workers.
Performs other related tasks such as filling sandbags to control flooding, chipping trees, sweeping, flushing culvert pipes, and building wooden deck bridges.
Knowledge of : Operation, care, minor adjustment and repair of graders, power shovels, dozers, and earth-moving equipment; road construction tools, methods and materials; provisions of the California Vehicle Code pertaining to heavy equipment operation on streets and highways and the proper signing and marking of roads; maintaining records and work schedules in relation to supervision of work crews.
Ability to : Skillfully and safely operate a variety of heavy equipment and to train personnel in the use of power-driven equipment; supervise and train personnel; schedule materials and equipment; work cooperatively with others.
Education and experience equivalent to two years of experience as a Public Works Maintenance Worker II in Sutter County, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements : Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to work around electrical currents and / or hazardous materials in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold.
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver's License. Must maintain a driving record that will meet commercial insurance requirements.
