JOB SUMMARY :
Under general supervision of the Meter Service Supervisor, the Service Technician I is responsible for performing specialized duties in relation to electric meter maintenance, reading, and customer service work orders.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :
- Reads and records consumption of residential and commercial electric and water meters with mobile hand-held reading devices and manual reads; verifies that readings are correct and within parameters.
- Responds to customer service requests, not limited to connections, disconnects, rereading meters, etc. and may be required to respond to emergency callouts or assist the operation crews with system repairs.
- Operates equipment for meters and other electrical equipment.
- Creates and updates spreadsheets and prepares assigned reports.
- Trims trees away from electric service lines.
- May perform assigned maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintain electric service lines and other electrical facilities.
- Observes safety rules for assigned job responsibilities; performs safety tests of equipment to ensure staff safety.
- Performs preventive maintenance and updates documentation.
- Installs and repairs streetlights.
- Maintains records of work performed and materials used.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team.
- Represents the City with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Position requires the ability to work off-duty hours and may perform on-call duties as part of an on-call rotation.
- Travels to attend meetings and training as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Demonstrate high ethical standards, trustworthiness, and personal integrity.
- Regular attendance, dependability, and promptness are required for the scheduled workday or agreed upon hours 100% of the time, to ensure consistency and completeness of department's processes.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :
Knowledge of and ability to apply local, state and federal regulations that apply to department functions.Knowledge of safety procedures and potential hazards, of servicing procedures and repair techniques, and of various types of equipment and their related applications.Skill in the use of assigned vehicles, tools, equipment, machines, and systems.Ability to learn how to use new assigned vehicles, tools, equipment, machines, and systems.Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions of a technical nature.Ability to analyze and resolve problems.Ability to read and write.Ability to safely operate a variety of light duty vehicles.Ability to communicate effectively with customers and staff both verbally and in writing.Ability to perform tasks effectively and efficiently.Ability to plan and schedule work and implement directives without constant supervision.Ability to present a professional appearance and conduct when representing the City.Ability to work cooperatively and productively with supervisor, individuals, co-workers, and groups of persons at all levels of activity, contributing to a strong spirit of teamwork.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies and the general public using tact, courtesy and good judgment.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
High School Diploma / GEDAND
Two (2) years of customer service experienceOR
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an insurable driving record.Must be able to pass the City's Pre-employment screenings including background and drug screenings.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT :
Tasks involve operation of vehicles, equipment, machines, and various tools including hand and power tools. Tasks require strength and mobility to work in a typical field setting, including operating hand and power tools; stamina to perform sustained physical labor, including driving, standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and working in confined or awkward spaces; strength to lift and maneuver materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Physical requirements include visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Work is subject to exposure to frequent travel, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, dust, and noxious odors.
