Overview
Senior Transportation Construction Inspector (Full-Time). Location : Chase City, VA.
Responsibilities
- Performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty.
- Performs field checks of all "red-line" as-built plans to assure completeness of the plans.
- Performs on-site field compliance inspection, quality assurance and progress monitoring at various construction projects for conformance to specifications and codes.
- Develops payment applications.
- Ensures that all maintenance and new construction is completed in accordance with the contract, plans and specifications, approved shop drawings, approved material lists, and permit requirements. Communicates with and advises contractors of discrepancies and the necessary actions to conform to the plans and specifications.
- Performs required materials testing.
- Performs basic to moderate surveying and necessary measurements to check line, grade and dimensions of roadway and structural elements and advises the contractor of any discrepancies.
- Communicates effectively and professionally with agency, contractor and MBP personnel.
- Performs final inspection, prepares punchlists, and ensures all items on the punchlist are completed or corrected by the contractor.
- Maintains project records including daily diaries documenting work performed by construction contractors with locations, workforce, equipment, materials, project photos and inspection reports. Reports may involve basic to moderate algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric calculations and sketches.
- May track submittals and requests for information. Maintains project correspondence.
- Performs various administrative duties required of MBP team members.
- Inspects grading, paving, demolitions, special design bridge, signal, signing, coating, utility projects and other special projects as assigned.
- Researches proper inspection and construction methods to be prepared for inspection requirements.
- Reviews performance and may assist in the oversight, training and development of Inspector I, Inspector Trainee and Interns / Co-ops, providing daily advising of corrective actions to ensure teamwork, partnering and project success.
- Reviews and / or prepares daily reports for project diary entries, as-built plans, materials books, and work books.
- Prepares and checks construction project reports and monthly project estimates and communicates corrections to appropriate parties.
- Assists in constructibility and bidability reviews.
- Monitors project budget and schedules.
- Assists in contractor's monthly evaluations.
- Provides customer service and good etiquette to the traveling public, adjacent property owners, and other project stakeholders.
- Performs various administrative duties including daily timesheet, monthly expense report, and monthly mileage report.
Additional Duties
Obtains training, professional development, and introduction to marketing including involvement with professional associations.May be required to participate in shortlist interviews.May be required to coordinate, monitor and manage all inspection activities on a project.Actively participates in company activities, including branch and company meetings.Obtains intermediate to advanced training and certifications.Maintains certifications required to inspect the work for which the Senior Inspector is responsible for monitoring.May need to perform duties of Construction Inspector I.Education / Knowledge
High school diploma or GED and significant years of experience in engineering, architecture, or a skilled craft in the construction industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Must possess OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification or obtain within 3 months of hire.Working knowledge of basic mathematics including algebraic, geometric and trigonometric computations based on field measurements.Construction related training and / or experience that demonstrates ability to perform duties.Must have computer skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, email, internet navigation, and other web-based tools.Must show knowledge of client or MBP construction management information systems such as SiteManager, HICAM, MBP's OnTrack system, or be able to learn systems within one month of hire.Knowledge of construction and inspection materials, methods, and tools for the type of construction being monitored (buildings, highways, roads or bridges).Proficient knowledge of multiple construction operations.Certifications from at least one of the following : State DOT, WACEL, ICC, NICET, CMAA, NACE, or MARTCP.Certifications preferred for horizontal construction : Soil, Aggregate, Asphalt, Concrete, Nuclear Testing, Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, Traffic Control, and E&S Control as appropriate for the project.Additional certifications preferred : CCM (Certified Construction Manager), CMIT (Construction Manager in Training).Skills and Abilities
Ability to independently implement quality control procedures.Ability to understand and track project schedules.Ability to collect, analyze and interpret statistical data.Ability to provide technical supervision, leadership and training to other inspectors.Ability to identify potential problems and derive recommended solutions from past experiences.Ability to utilize computers (including Microsoft Office) and other specialized equipment.Ability to read and interpret construction plans and contract specifications.Skilled at applying mathematical formulas and engineering principles to determine field adjustments.Ability to communicate inspection issues effectively with internal and external customers.Ability to utilize surveying and measurement tools for inspections (survey levels, transits, levels, tapes, etc.).Ability to obtain and maintain industry certifications specific to duties assigned.Able to stand, sit, climb, and work outdoors on project sites; tolerate varying weather conditions.Ability to travel and drive regularly and maintain a valid driver's license.Guidance / Responsibility
Assignments are generally received from Engineers / Consultants, Project Inspectors, Construction Manager or Project Manager.Public and client interface.Ability to work independently with periodic guidance and direction as knowledge grows.Special Requirements
Fingerprint-based criminal history background check, DMV driving record check, reference verification, and work history verification required prior to employment. Valid driver's license and safety shoes required.Supervisory
May supervise the work of Construction Inspector I, Construction Inspector Trainees and / or Co-ops / Interns.
